Modern backpackers often go to extremes worrying about weight ( sawed off tooth brushes, etc.), and still have huge loads. This is cuz they take too much crap.
On an extended bear hunt in Prince William Sound, Alaska, I recieved what i take as a huge compliment. The bush pilot said as he dropped us off- "I have had guys on two day fish trips take more stuff".
We carried real food, too. Onions, 'taters, and flour, supplimented by blueberries, salmon, and bear meat. What we didn't take was a lot of manufactured stuff. No stove, tent (used a tarp leanto), chain saw, or huge tackle box. We did fine, and had a ball. Saw some amazing rain, too.
