light shovel for my pack

I have been looking for a light shovel to throw in my pack. Anyone ever use the Glock entrenching tool. The shovel head itself is made of polymer, so I dont know how strong it would be. Will it shovel out frozen earth if needed? Any opinions would be great.

I can't recommend ANY tool to shovel frozen ground. And I have barn full of heavy equipment, construction, and farm/ranch tools! Even my John Deere backhoe can't easily move frozen earth. :) I'm not sure what your frozen ground is like, but a full-sized, heavy-duty round point steel shovel will simply bounce off my frozen ground for 4-months out of the year. I'm a big guy too, with a size 14 boot. ;)

When the ground is frozen and snowy, I simply elevate my fires on a platform. Once the fire has been burning for a time, it will thaw the ground down a few inches, then if you want to dig or scrape some earth away, you can (even with a trowel).

Correct, the large digging surface part. The ones I saw for sale at the show were polymer. What are you charging for yours at your shop, and what is the weight of them. I might prefer the heavier one with steel blade. If its not that much heavier, I would have a little more confidence with a steel blade over plastic.

ozark trail makes a nice stainless shovel very small and stronge folds up for easy storage and you can find it at most any wal-mart
