light weight and affordable knife

Mora Companion is impossible to beat for weight and value for the $$.

I do a lot of backpacking and climbing. I always have a smallish leatherman (not micra small) for equipment repairs and I typically take a small or mid sized fixed blade.

Ditto the Mora suggestion.

For a cheap folder, it doesn't get much better that the Rat 1 or 2. Cheap. Relatively weatherproof, and it should be more than enough knife for anything your likely to need a knife for while backpacking.

For less than two $20 bills (including postage), you can get both an Opi (#8 or #9) AND one of the basic Moras — and try them out on trips. Even if you end up someday setting them aside and going with a third make of knife, you won't have blown the budget and you'll have tried two different approaches to the idea of a hiker/backpacking knife.

Get 'em both.
