I want to buy my wife a folding knife to put in her purse.
I like the spyderco knives. Is there a trustworthy source
directly from japan? I'm concerned about knockoffs
and inflated prices from some known sources.

Characteristics:
Sharp blade...I can sharpen on quality freehand stones, as well as maintain with a strop.
A typical purpose/uses: open packages, cut through cords, and on the go food items.
Easy to open and close
Light weight
Attractive
Price range 35-55.00 dollars...I don't mind using an importer. Expedited shipping cost usually are reasonable.
Would I have to pay more?

I don't have spyderco...just an example of what appears to have characteristics sought.

Prefer stainless..but something that has some resistance to rust. Not likely to be in wet environments
and quality carbon can build up a resistance.

Sorry, if this an old re-run topic

Delica.
Where are you located? You shouldn't have any worries buying from a reputable dealer.

This has been my quest for the past 6 months. I spent a little more money, but the Curtiss Cruze Slimline 2.75" has been the best I've found. AMAZING! SIMPLY AMAZING! I got it from bladecousa. I also have enjoyed the Brouse Bionic I got from usamadeblade. Super people super knives! I ended up calling dealers and getting their recommendations; funny how not every dealer would talk to me, but these two did!

My wife has shown some interest in the Gerber LST. Not exactly what you are looking for but but it is lockable, comes in different colors and only weighs about 1.2 oz.!

A.G. Russell 3" lockback. I comes in a few different handle materials, I have the carbon fiber that weighs 23 grams with the leather slip case that is included with the knife. It is a nice little knife with VG-10 steel that is in your price range.

There are a few ebay sellers from japan...it's those guys who sell some kitchen knives at reasonable prices...if you know what to get...with whom I wish that I could find "the" folding knife
that meets expectations.Could have something to know with esoteric laws about folding knives. The little higo's just look like something for sharpening pencils. Some mentioned above are outside my price range. Dragonfly comes close. Found a yellow one and this will work if my wife likes it. Also sent her the ag russell titantium
knife with vg10 steel. Clearly Japanese. Sometimes that steel can be chippy. For the money, I like it. Up to her to decide. Appreciate the input. Amazing how many of the spyderco's come from
China...and lots of folks cautioning about fakes.

I could be wrong but I don't like chineee steel....may hold an edge but not fun to sharpen...

Yes you are wrong. The Chinese steel you will most likely see in blades is 8Cr13MoV. Its ok budget steel and is easy to sharpen but dulls rather quickly. You will see variations like 7Cr or 9Cr but they are all similar and very close to the Japanese AUS8. I like the AUS8 better though and you will like it too. Get her an Ontario Rat 2 in pink for $30. Do a search on this site or on you tube and you will see the quality and value. It truly can't be beat for $30.

I went through this when my wife decided she was unhappy with her larger knife. Go to knifeworks.com, get her a Spyderco Dragonfly and let her choose her color (yellow, black, orange, forest green, dark green, grey, silver, etc. and there will be a purple one at some point). My wife abandoned her other high quality larger knife for one of these as it fits her tiny hand very well, weighs only 1 oz, and does everything she needs to do. It is small enough to fit into what fashion laughingly calls pockets on women's pants and fits into those tiny purses she carries, as well.
Here is the one she chose: http://www.knifeworks.com/spydercodragonfly2c28por2orangefrnplainedge.aspx#.VAz8TMKSwb4

There is even one engraved with a pretty dragonfly made completely out of stainless steel, but is heavier as a result. http://www.knifeworks.com/spydercodragonflysstattoo.aspx#.VAz9U8KSwb4

If she wants one slightly larger, get her a Spyderco Cat. A wonderful knife. http://www.knifeworks.com/spydercocatc129gp440cbladesteelblackg-10plainedge.aspx#.VAz9nsKSwb4

But the Dragonfly is what my wife fell in love with.

Delica 4 FFG for her... and Endura 4 FFG for you... it's a win-win!!

Of course, there are many colors to chose from. And if you order from a BF sponsor/member/dealer, you have nothing to worry about when it comes to authenticity.

This will clearly be over your budget. The Delica is a nice knife and I have several, but they are overpriced in my opinion. They should be in the $35 range for what you get (again this is my opinion). But you can get a Rat 2 for her and a Rat 1 for you and be at the same price of one Delica. The Rat series is ABSOLUTELY a better value than the Delica, and has nicer lines and aesthetics as well. Those smooth (but nicely textured) handles are way classier looking than the FRN of the Delica. It's not as light as the Delica OK. But for a blade that size the difference is barely noticable. This is From a Spyderco Fanboy too! I carry a PM2 everyday.

I added the rat2 to the short list, which only also includes: ag russell and spydergo drangonfly 2/orange.
Spydergo makes you work to find a good price and with vg10 steel. I'm ok with aus8steel..i thought that was a given.
All fine suggestions...attractive, good steel, good blade profile, and good ergonomics. Lightweight is likely to rule
out rat2...but that one does look like best value. She can't go wrong with any. Thanks for the help..it was helpful!!

Once I started looking, what a crowded field out there and so
much junk...just heard a ronco commerical on the food channel. When it comes to kitchen knives it's embarrassing
to see what is bought.
