Does anybody out there have a interest in lighters? If so what do people carry or collect? I have a quantum windproof and of course a Zippo.

How about lighters and fire starters too.

I had three zippos, now two. Two were stamped VRI the motto of the Royal Canadain Regiment. Currently I am looking for a Canadian Airborne ligher. Being a non-smoker I was a little bit concern when I went through a bottle of fluid per month when I first got them.

Other firestarters: flint lantern lighter, waterproof matches (all sizes).

Just own one zippo, that I recieved as a gift almost ten years ago. It is engraved with my initials, and must have sat in a drawer for five years until I pulled it out this last New Years Eve. Added fliud, primed the wick, worked perfect. One fellow at the party that night asked if it could do the old "ten times" trick, and fourty something lights in a row later we both got bored with the game and quit. It has now earned a place in my rotation of gear, but I am resisting the temptation to add an alternate. (But you can never have too many knives

)

I also have an old Spark Lite, which is the really just the sparking mechanism used in cigarette lighters mounted onto an orange plastic stick. The thing is only as big as a couple of wooden matches, and is a good little tinder starter for camping or in an emergency. And waterproof matches in first aid and tool kits.

You can't beat Zippo for functional simplicity. I received one as an award for four consecutive years perfect attendance. Even though I don't smoke it finds it's way in my pocket every morining. It's a contrast to todays throw away disposable lighter society. You can carry a Zippo for years and pass it down to your children (with a promise not to take up smoking.)

Ok it seems like the others who also have lighters don't smoke, I am not sure why you would carry a lighter if you did not smoke, but I do smoke and do carry a lighter all the time. You name it I have one or have had one. The only problem with lighters is that they keep walking off. I am glad that knives do not do that.

The reason for non-smokers carrying lighters is easy to explain... lighting a woman's cigarette is the most sexual act between a man and a woman without doing anything, well, sexual.

But seriously, I carry a lighter for the same reason I carry a knife; you never know when you'll need it. Fire is so basic yet essential. Even though I have a small flashlight with me, sometimes i just use a zippo to light up a room. You can sterlize, or even just warm your hands on a cold day (for zippos, close the lid half-way while the flame is lit and warm the cover. Then close it and hold it between your hands). Butane lighters are also effective for these things.

Yeah, the reasoning is kinda simplistic, but it works for me.

I carry a Zippo and a magnesium fire starter all the time. I am very "into" fine Cigars. Only smoke one or two a week. (At 8 to 10 bucks each, that all I can afford!) But the Zippo is with me only when I'm carrying a knife or awake. (Same thing)

Being up here in the great frozen north, I find that it is a wise thing to have the ability to make fire. I quit smoking almost three years ago, but lighters were so handy, I still keep one on me at all times. I like Bics myself, and I kinda miss the ones with the childroof thingy, it kept the button from being depressed when in my pocket, thus conserving precious butane. Even when I smoked, a Bic would last about a year and a half or so. For $.98, you can't do much better than that. And Yes, Lighting a ladies cigarette is a good way to score points, but I wouldn't go out with a chick that smoked (well, not since I quit, and my present girlfriend (future wife) would kill me on top of that

). I have joined the ranks of the militant ex-smokers, and I find the habit repulsive.

I carry a zippo everyday, and, yes, I do smoke. Used to carry one before I started smoking cigarettes again, for the occasional cigar.

I have a nice one from their outdoors art collection with a wolf on it. It is my favourite. If I were ever to get another tattoo, this would be it (but I already have a wolf tattoo). What can I say, I like wolves.

I always take a zippo with me when hiking. I also have a magnesium fire starter in my hip pouch (which goes with me whether I am dayhiking or backpacking).

Fire and a blade: two of man's oldest tools.

I own 3 Zippos and a knock off from Jack Daniels. I am a smoker, roll my own) and carry my personally modified Zippo all the time. I purchased a plain stainless model and attached a Triumph Badge to it,(I ride a Triumph Trident), and it looks real cool. Get heaps of comments on it. Looks far better than the Harley production ones, just like the bike! (Insert smiley here)

p.s. How do you guys get the smileys in?

Smileys are just like the ones with the normal keys:

By the way, Smoky Mountain Knife Works is advertising a plain Zippo for $8.99! Has anyone bought one? That sounds like a knockoff price, but I'd love to pick one up if it's for real. In fact, I think I'll get one and let everyone know. Or did I miss something and that's now a normal price for a Zippo? I made the mistake of buying a $7 knockoff when I was a teenager, though--the flint locked up two weeks later.

Did someone mention Zippo's?

I only own around eight, so far. My daily is a black plastic scaled, chrome plated one with my initials. I recently pick up a cute little Zippoish type lighter that looks like a bullet-keyring- you unscrew it in the middle and it has a baby Zippo type lighting system- uses the same fluid, too.(Duh)
I just love gadges and gizmo's...

I had a quantum windproof but gave it away when I quit smoking..damn it...wish I had it back. My son got me a Colibri for Christmas with a neat cigar cutter built right in on the bottom.( after I quit cigs I went to cigars). I also have an engraved Zippo I got from the kids on the little league team I coached. It always brings back great memories..

I don't smoke. I'm just a pyromaniac. I carry an EMS windproof climber's lighter with me daily. Great for sealing the ends of nylon rope and lighting camp stoves, even in below freezing weather. If you're really handy with one, you can even singe the wings off a fly before it can take off. Well, after that, they can't take off anymore.

The Blazer Pocket Micro Torch is great, except they only seem to last for about two and a half years before they die, I have gone through two and am on my third, and at like 70 bucks a pop that tells you how much I like them. One caution...do not let just anyone else use yours, I have seen several people try to burn off their hair etc when the flame is a little more than they expected.

I am not really sure why they stop working after about 18 months. I always used their own brand of lighter fuel, and I used compressed air(as they recomend) to clean them, but they seem to clog or something and the flame is difficult to get to light and when it is lit it is worthless for lighting anything. Of course I might have been using them more than is normal because I always carried them. I know if you buy the cheap knock off versions that you see in gas stations you will be lucky if they last through the butain that they come filled with. So I really do not know why they stop working, I would guess that some internal part or other wares out. I have never bothered to try and get them repaired though that would be an option. I do still recomend them though, they are just the neatest lighters available.
