Hey guys,

I want to buy a 5-6 inch fixed blade for a backpacking trip next summer. We will be goin to Gannett Peak in Wyoming. The knife must be LIGHT! It MUST be less than 5oz, preferably less.

It also needs to have scales. G10, Micarta, wood, carbon fiber, something else, I don't care. It can not be a frame style or a cord wrapped knife. Oh yes--it should be full tang, but the tang can be skeletonized.

Price is not much of an issue. If i need to, I will order a custom with M4 and carbon fiber handles. Are any of you able to do that? Quotes on price?

I like the shape of this knife:

I don't like the prybar/pommel thing, and the knife weighs 9 oz. Would it be possible to make a knife like the one pictured out of 1/8 inch M4 (with a skeletonized frame) and carbon fiber scales?

Or is there a production knife with these or similar specs?

Thanks for the replies. I own several Mora knives, and they are great. I really do want full tang though, as I will be batoning wood and doing other "hard" tasks.

I never heard of the Street Bowie--it is cool. However, the blade is short for what I need/want.

nopyo--I didn't know that forum existed. Thanks for posting.

The Glock knife is extremely light and at a 1/4" spring steel is nearly indestructible.

The Spyderco Street Bowie has a 5.05" blade, which is within your specs. It isn't full tang, however.

One of the lightest knives in that size range I know of is the Fallkniven S1; .2" thick, 5.1" blade, and 5.7 oz. I got one as an ultralight backpacking knife and it works much better than I could have expected; great steel, handle, and fantastic convex grind. I would definitely recommend it. You can get them for $135 if you know where to look.

Try Big Chris if you decide to go the custom route. He is a member here and he works with M4.

Extremely light?!? it is over 7 oz. That is light for a "regular" fixed blade, but won't cut it for what I need. (<5oz)

Street Bowie--I guess I looked at the wrong knife before. It is a contender, I just don't love the shape.

I've heard great things about the S1. However, it isn't full tang. Even so, could you email me where you can buy it for $135?

Yes. I have one of his EDCs in M4 and I love it. I'm not positive he can do skeletonized tangs, though. He will work with you on your design.

Al Mar SERE Operator. 5" VG10 blade, full-tang, micarta handles, weighs 6 oz. (I think the sheath is included in the weight).

They also have a 4" blade version at 4 oz.

Kinda pricey though.
