Lightweight bolt action with irons?....

If you do decide to go with a Bolt Action, the Savage Scout is a very nice choice, as well as a Remington Model Seven.

IMHO, the Puma's are a bit hit and miss. I've got two of them. One carbine (with a regular lever) that has excellent fit, finish, etc. and one rifle with a slightly crooked bore, mediocre fit and finish, and I had to take the rear sight ramp completely off to get it on target at 50 yards.
Love them Marlins. Grew up with one of the .357's. Only reason I don't have one now is that there's not much I shoot at here in Alaska with that particular cartridge.

Let me know if you're interested in a Savage Scout. I might know where there's a real good deal on one.:D

FWIW, I'm going through similar frustrations looking for a medium weight 3006 or .308 with a 20" non tapered bbl, Iron sights, good sized bolt handle, and a detachable mag. oh, and a price tag of 1K or less. I think I'm just gonna have to build one on a Remington 700 action, although the Steyr Border Patrol is damn nice, albeit pricey.

good luck in your hunt!:D

Jeez, that's unfortunate...I guess I got lucky! I hate when you have to "luck out" to get a good rifle though...bad QC really annoys me.

I only have experience with the one I own...but it's sure a sweet little rifle!

/Rant On/

Why is it so hard to find a rifle like this? It's astounding to me. Some companies do offer lightweight rifles, and you pay hundred(s) per ounce dropped it seems. Then others will offer a rifle with irons, and somehow a few pounds are added along with it.

You'd think with the variety in firearm manufacturers today, that this area would be easily filled! I realize you can go the distance and get something like a Steyr Scout, etc., but I'm hunting for something way shy of 4 figures.

A decent milsurp of course would be the next best thing, but it sucks lugging around 9 pound beasts. Even my 'little' MN M38 ain't no featherweight.

I think I'm gonna have to get a little .30-30 and be done with it! Or I'll have to stick with a 12 ga pump. All I wanted was a handy little trail rifle!

/Rant off/
You have my sympathy.
I have an Old Ruger 77 bolt-action in .308 with 22 inch barrel and iron sights.
Fairly light but not ultra/light.
Wanted the light version but couldn't get one with iron sites.
I really don't like rifles without iron sites.
Its getting harder to find bolt-actions with iron sights, or at least they don't seem to stock them around here.

Hmmm
How about the Remington 710?
I was looking at a used one last week. It had iron sites and detachable box magazine.
Anybody here have any experience with the 710?

Or maybe try to find a used Savage scout bolt action?

Edit-
Dang! Just looked at the Remington website the 770 (new version of the 710) is 8.5 pounds!
The 710 i handled didn't seem that heavy.

I believe there is a Tikka T3 model that comes with irons

They've been back-ordered forever, but...

regardless of what the net rumor says, the Civil Guardia, imported by Samco @$129.00, in 7.62x51, is the rifle that keeps me from looking for a light-weight in any caliber. Even got a Ramline stock for it, put it on, shot it, took it off, replaced the badly bubba'd wood stock. Will be selling the small ring mauser Ramline stock.

I've been shooting this one for over 20 years. Extended the stock, put on a pad, and, just as an example, got three deer this past Winter over iron sights.

I am NOT the mighty deer hunter, btw.

But...if not the CG, then I gotta go with the others. Cheap Savage or lever gun would be your best bet.

(BTW...gun choosing is to men as shoe-shopping is to women. :) )

Remington Model Seven and have iron sight put on it. I have a model seven stainless/synthetic 7mm-08 and its light.

I'll have lots to check into when I head to the gunshop next!

Re: the Ruger Frontier- It's not a bad rifle, but I hear mixed things about them. I also don't want to have to pay extra for irons. At least not yet.

I'd really dig a decent lightweight single shot, but even those are hard to come by. I know the H&R's and NEF's are around, but they are sorely heavy for what they are (IMO). I haven't, though, had a chance to handle one of their superlights, so that might be worth looking into.

My Holy Grail of trail rifles:

Just haven't found one yet.

What about some of the older surplus military rifles ! You can get an M44 Carbine 7.62x54R in good cond. for around $150 , The ammo is fairly easy to find also. I had 2 Enfields .303 brit. , It was heavy but it shot AWSOME ! Ammo for the .303 is gatting hard to find so I sold mine ( I miss her :( )

If weight is a big priority then you might look at the H&R Handi rifle. I know it's a single shot but light and handy for sure and comes in calibers from .22 to 45-70. Marlin owns this line now and the quality for the price is hard to beat.

I like them but I think a lot are pretty heavy for what you get. I'm gonna look into their ultralight series though!

NEF and Handi are better quality than Rossi.

Had an NEF in 30-30. Heavy, hammer spur was awkward, and didn't "swing up" the way I wanted it to. Most of the weight is trigger and back...at least this one was.

I'd love it if they would stop hewing 4x4s and make a sleek stock for their actions.

A lot of people dont care for them. But i like mine. It'll shoot 1 moa and i'm not even a great shot. Its bigger (longer pull, thicker stock) than a M38, but lighter, since it has a plastic stock. Overall i think that it would make a great "trail rifle"
Hope that helps

I have a Marlin 1894C in .357 Magnum. It has an 18" Barrel and weighs in about 6 pounds. I installed a Peep sight and new front blade from Skinner Sights and they work great!! They mount on the reciver using the predrilled holes for a scope mount. It's rather nice that you don't need to drill the stock or receiver for them to work. Thats one of the reasons I went with those sights, the other was their low profile.

Good luckw ith your search and please let us know what you come up with. :)

Yes heald it and shot it in 7mm-08 great little gun and very versatile imo, took a woodchuck at 125yrd with it. it was a great "walk around" gun. It doesnt however compare to my 94 and I love carrying that thing around my farms. Its light and quick and in .45 it has medium recoil (I handload it to the upper parts of the .45LC limits) and its accurate to easily 100yrds for me....course I have a soft spot for levers and own marlins, rossi's, puma's, uberti's, brownings, rugers, winchesters etc. My grandfather has passed down to me a ruger lever in .250 savage thats been a great gun and killed lots of deer.
