Hi all,

I am looking for a folder with the following criteria:

- light weight and thin (as in the over all thickness of the knife handle)
- locking mechanism similar to Benchmade Axis lock
- good tip strength

I work in a restaurant kitchen so i will use it mostly to cut boxes, case straps (plastic), tape, etc...

Thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds like the Light weight Spyderco Manix 2 would meet your needs. For a few more dollars you could get a Benchmade 940. Good Luck! Kevin

Some great options would be the Benchmade Mini-griptilian, the Spyderco Manix 2, or if you could work with a backlock instead of the Axis lock, the Spyderco Delica or Endura.

benchmades 707 sequel is right at the top of your price range but it is awesome. its a better version of the mini griptilian. Same size blade but better looking shape and aluminum scales instead of plastic, and the axis is unbelievably smooth. I love it so much I bought 2 both plain edge one satin one black dlc. I have been thinking about buying a 3rd with serrations. it is also thinner then the mini grip :)

hd 13960 just got mine from knifeworks its a benchmade 960 with harley davidson logos on it but its also under $90 shipped. the 960 sells for around $200 so its a steal

yeah never pay msrp there are several sites that offer huge discounts. or buy off the exchange right here on the forums lots of great people selling great knives

I've looked at the benchmade 530 in store and it is very nice. I really like how the 530's handle is slim (might fit well in my pocket- im picky). How much thicker is the handle between the 530 and the Osborne 960? I found the 960 for about $80

the 960 is a little thicker not sure exact measurements but its also an aluminum handle as opposed to the almost all plastic 530. the 530 being the thinnest is also the lightest at 1.88ounces and the 960 is 2.26 so if weight is an issue then the 530 is great.

I love my BM 530 and have to comment: while it may not have "tip strength" in the eyes of many users (pointy tip; thin blade overall), it should be well-ready for your described tasks. About the only downside I could see is that it can look pretty scary/dagger-like to non-knife people.

It's such a great knife to have in a collection, though. It's so light and thin, it truly disappears in a pocket or when clipped to running shorts. Partial steel liners, to keep weight down... brilliant.

Edit: I also have a BM 943, and a Spyderco Delica 4--great options. If I could pick just one of these, I'd go BM 943 (or 940). Crazy fast deployment... it too disappears in the pocket.

the 707 is about 1-2mm thicker then the 530 and it has a great blade and aluminum scales the g10 inserts are a nice touch aswell

I would recommend bumping up your budget $30 and get a 940. It is about the perfect thin, lightweight, strong tip edc with an axis lock. If you don't have the $, scrimp and save for another month. I promise you will be satisfied. As a in budget recommendation I would say mini-grip.

the 960 is very thin one of the thinest knives I ve held and I love the feel of the handle the only problem is the tip is thin I didnt see that in youre first post sorry. The endura has a lockback wich I dont like it also feels very cheap I said feels cheap not is cheap. The 940 is awesome and has a very cool blade shape the knife is very similar to the 960 but its $50 more than the 960 you found.
