Lightweight? NO - Heavyweight!

Like I said it's a fairly common critique. Some people never click with Spyderco and some people only click with a couple models.

What you've been saying in this and other threads makes me think that Spyderco is probably not your ideal brand. It sounds to me like your perfect knife is some form of carbon fiber ZT flipper or maybe Benchmade. There's no shortage of lightweight, narrow, quality knifes.

Of course, I look at the Native 5 and see perfection, like Sal read my mind and made the exact knife I was thinking of. I know I'm not alone in those thoughts. Some people like me look at that oddly-shaped leaf blade and little hearts come of out their eyes. For everyone else, there's lots of fish in the sea.

You're probably right. I've owned many Spyderco knives and have sold most of them. I do still have and will always have my Chaparral CF. For me, it's the greatest knife ever made by Spyderco. I also still have my Delica-4 that was my EDC, until it was replaced by my Ontario Rat Model-2. I just purchased and received a Persistence that I'm still on the fence about. I'm going to give it another few days and see what happens.

My Native-5 was the closest "almost a keeper" Spyderco that I've owned. I loved the looks of that knife, especially while closed. It was not as tall as a traditional Sypderco. The blade was narrower than a traditional Spyderco. What I didn't care for and what caused me to return it was the chunkiness of the knife while holding it. It felt very boxy/chunky to me. Also, due to the finger choil, much of the potential cutting surface was taken away. In addition, I didn't care for the sound it made when the the blade locked-in. It sounded too "plasticy" to me.

At any rate, as said many times before, Spyderco has a large enough product line that most everyone can find one they like. In my case, it's the Chaparral-CF. Good luck with your Native and Merry Christmas to you and your family.

I'm 99% certain my wife has been tracking my posts and got me a serrated lw native for xmas. I'm pretty stoked about it! I always keep a serrated folder for my yard and garden use.

She got me a Starbenza last xmas. It's a fantastic knife but I really just prefer non Ti folders for my working knives.

The Native is a very traditional Spyderco, and has been in the line-up for a very long time... all the way back to its great grandpa Blackhawk.

I personally enjoy the wider chunky feeling of the Native when in-hand. A nice hand filling alternative in that size category. It's always a constant battle of sacrifices between feeling good during in the hand, and also remaining slim when folded and disappearing in pocket.
Mine also has a very reaffirming vault door sound and sensation to the lock, especially when compared to the thinner siblings like the Delica and Endura and whatnot.

Good luck on your search, though, seems you're having a bit of a tough go at it. I haven't seen you post up a successful thread yet.

I completely disagree on all counts. Love-love-love the choil, perfect for me as I like to hold very close to the blade. Does not feel boxy at all. And I love the sound and feel of the lockup. Fits my hand to a "T." But everyone's taste is different.

My wife gave me my Xmas present early. It really as people say. Main points are 1) It's not as chubby in hand as it looks in photos 2)It really is a very solid/potentially better version of the Delica and 3) The low profile hole should be expanded to more of the Spyderco lineup. It really is great in the pocket and in the hand. My biggest complaint with some of the EDC sized Spydercos are that they really don't EDC all that well. The Native is a perfect combination and I knew it as soon as I got it in hand.

Congrats. Hard to go wrong with a Native. You may also like the Manix.

My blue S110V Native is only 1/10th of an ounce heavier than my VG10 Delica. I checked!

Nice one! The black blade is a looker.

PS: I see your combo edge and raise you a full spyder edge ! :D

Ha that's great! I actually thought I was going to be getting a full serrated one but my wife picked this particular one out based on looks. It's a keeper, the wife too!

I am seriously impressed by my Native 5 lw. F&F is perfect, action is superb and it came light saber sharp. This is easily the best FRN knife I've owned! I'll be putting this one through the ringer!

After owning 100+ Spyderco's over the years I now only own three. This is mostly due to my tastes trending toward traditional knives and has no bearing on how I feel about Spyderco (great knife company). That being said, of the three I have left one of them is the Native 5. I love it. Mine is the G10 version (now micarta) and I have often thought of getting the FRN version. It is just a solid workhorse of a knife with great ergonomics even for guys with giant gorilla hands like me. :D

I think one of the big factors here is that some people (myself included) don't really care about blade:handle ratios. From a design standpoint, a good ratio is better, but from a usage standpoint it's a very different question. There are exceedingly few situations in which more than a couple inches of cutting edge is necessary, or even useful. On the other hand, an ergonomic handle (and by extension good control of the blade) is useful every time you use a knife.

Don't get me wrong. I love a finger-choil. It's one of the features on my Chaparral that I love. That being said, on the Native-5, for me, I felt I was losing too much cutting surface vs the size of the scale/handle. I fully understand that a knife must feel good in the user's hand for it to be successful for that particular user. In my case, that knife failed on that front too. The handle was to boxy, chunky and "plasticy" for my tastes. If my only issue with the knife was the cutting length to handle ratio, I would have have kept it, however, there were too many other things I didn't care for.

Again, that's the beauty of the product line. There's something there for everyone.

Merry Christmas to you and your family.

If you ever decide to get down to just two Spydercos, let me be first in line for your N5, because man, that is the cat's a$$! More photos please.:thumbup:
