  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Lignum Vitae...

Yes, I know about kamagong. I think another name for it is Macassar ebony. I have a couple of Kali sticks made from this stuff and it is amazingly hard and dense.
My teacher got the sticks for me as his sister was the girlfriend of an illegal logger somewhere in the Philippines. It's a beautiful wood as well.

Close, but not exactly. Makassar/ macassar ebony is the term used for 3-5 species of true ebony that show a striped pattern of brown and black that grow throughout indonesia, so named because they were sold to the Dutch at the main port of makassar. Diospyros celebica is the most commonly quoted species for makassar ebony, but as someone who imports a lot of ebony from Indonesia, i can tell you there are a variety.

Kamagong, also known as Filipino ironwood or Filipino ebony is just one species, Diospyros discolor, which is endemic to the Philippines.

Thanks for this. I learn something every day. I got the macasser ebony term from a serious woodworker. My teacher who got me the sticks had no idea what it would be called in English. The kamagong that I have is a glossy black with streaks of brown through it. Beautiful wood even if it's not a true ebony.
Thanks again.

Personaly I like wood like that better then solid black.
The streakibg gives it personality
