My g-10 Endura 4 and I've felt like I really screwed up bad. I'm down to one Spyderco, an S30V Millie which will never leave as it's in my cool weather coat as an extra blade. I love it.

The Endura 4 G-10 was like a small Police 3 and the 3 3/4" blade was nothing to scoff at. (I like big knives, even folders).

So, not being able to re-score a G-10, I've been eyeballing the new multicolor Enduras in FFG and wonder what you Spyderco lovers think of it. It appears to have a thin SS liner - a plus and other than the FRN handles seems okay.

How are the ergos - exactly the same? Should I shell out the extra $30 some for the ZDP blade?

Thanks for your input. ;)

I would not recommend zdp, it is very difficult to sharpen and it's not worth the difference in the very good vg10.

NutnFancy said (I know I know), that Sal said: VG10 prices were rising and that it's a very good steel.

ZDP-189 is an aquired taste IMO. I've been carrying my ZDP-189 BRG Stretch for about 6 months or so now and have mixed feelings about the stuff but overall would recommend it if you have a decent sharpening system as well as if you plan on reserving the knife for lighter useage. Also ZDP-189 can and will rust but a bit of gun oil now and again seems to have cured that. Another thing is that ZDP-189 kinda likes a more coarse "working edge" rather than one with a great deal of sheen. I'm not sure if this is just limited to my observations or an accepted fact but ZDP-189 seems to me anyways to cut very aggresively:eek:. All in all I'd say it's not for everyone or even a general use EDC knife, but still like any other blade steel it has it's place as far as I'm concerned:thumbup:.

I would say get the zdp . For me it holds an edge that much better then vg 10. I have no problem sharpening zdp. I have not had a problem with brittleness either ,I bounced the edge of a dry hard plastic pvc valve and no chip. I was suprised cause people claim its brittle . There is a test out there where a guy cuts coffee cans with it no problem. I always flitz my blades when I sharpen so no rusting either.

I saw a video this a.m. that Jim Ankerson posted with a Spyderco Endura 4 sharpened with the coarse stone - it really looked like a shark and cut the heck out of stuff he uses for testing. It was a visual confirmation of what you posted about it.

Looks like it'll be the VG-10 for me. :D

I own both the G10 Endura and the ZDP FFG Endura. The FFG model is noticeably lighter than the G10 version. Personally, I find the FRN handles more comfortable. The ZDP steel is excellent; holds an edge really well. I know there is a lot of apprehension about sharpening ZDP but most of the pros here will tell you to not let your blade get dull, just touch it up to keep it sharp and you won't have to spend alot of effort re-profiling/resetting an edge. Hopes this helps. Good luck.

I'm down to one Spyderco

Just reading those words made me dizzy. I have to go lay down.

not being able to re-score a G-10

Some absolute genius - I don't remember who - started a thread a few weeks ago asking our Mr. Sal to bring back the G10 Endura. He appeared not to find the idea completely disagreeable. So who knows.

Yes on the liners, and they are milled.
The feel is very similar to the G10 flavor, though not as solid and hefty.
ZDP for extra money? Nah.

Just grab one. Maybe blue.

I second the suggestion for a ZDP blade. It's a great steel. The Stretch is one of my all time favorite knives. It feels good in the hand, slim in the pocket, slices like there is no tomorrow, and Sal designed that one for his personal use (as I understand).

This^

I love ZDP-189. Any effort at sharpening on the front end will pay dividends on the back end. I have 3 G-10 Enduras into which I have inserted ZDP-189 blades (2 FFG and 1 Saber). These knives are light and slim. They hold an edge for frickin' ever. The are totally ambidextrous and have wonderful fit and finish. The axial slim points are perfect for food preparation. The only way they could be improved (IMO) is an Axis lock and a Titanium handle.

Sorry guys the Stretch doesn't do it for me - different tastes in cosmetic appearance. I appreciate the input. I put a WTB thread up, maybe I can uncover a safe queen gathering dust...lol :D

So I use to have a Caly 3 CF ZDP-189 but I never had a chance to sharpen it because I sold it to my neighbor. I plan on picking up another Spydie in ZDP-189 (maybe an Endura or Stretch). I have an EdgePro Pro model and some DMT diamond bench stones. What grit/mesh should I stop at? What about a micro-bevel? So basically, how do you guys go about sharpening ZDP-189 on an EdgePro?

Don't jack my thread dude. Sharpen it until it's sharp! What's not to know? Strop it if it isn't dull.

I was never happy with my ZDP endura until I used the EdgePro to take it down to 30* inclusive. I ran it all the way thru the 1000 grit, then used the red-tipped sharpmaker rods to polish it off. Very happy with it now. I don't know if it was just my Endura, but the grind was all jacked up when I got it (used), so I never could do anything with the blade. The EP fixed all that for me, couldn't be happy.

That being said, I am seriously thinking about getting a FFG VG-10 Endura now that they are available in black. I just love how easy VG10 sharpens up, and I really dig the size and ergos of the Endura.

Some ZDP vids - I would use DMT bench stones down to x-fine and finish with an 8"x3" UF stone & strops. Where I started would depend on the blade's condition:

Geeeeez!...SORRY! I wasn't trying to jack. It just happened. But thanks for the vids anyways.
