Like in the movies this is my new tracker knife...

My brother and I, bought 2 machetes ( 4.00 dlls each ) and we did some drawing of the tracker knife shape and we cut it with a home tool.

And this is what we got....

Cool :-)
I might do that with an old machete of mine, just for grins and giggles.

I will put step by step and the tools that we used:

1.- Draw the knife in the machete
Paso1.JPG

2.- Put it in the work table
Paso2.JPG

3.- Two of the tools that we used

4.- Cuting the steel with the tool

Congratulations! I applaud you for going out and making something after being inspired. Tell us how well the knife works!

Roloss--the knife looks a bit rough, but certainly functional. Please try it out and let us know how it works. I think it's really great to see projects like this.

Ok, how did you manage to edit that first picture without the edit notification showing at the bottom of the page? I know that the picture that I saw had no leather wrapped around the handle.

He did it at the host.
Delete old picture, upload second picture with the same file-name as the first. the link inside the tags will be the same and will point to the new picture.

I do it all the time.

I changed the picture in the host using the same path with the same name.

Thank you for your comments.

That kind of work is a lot of fun and it's possible to make a very good knife that way. Some suggestions for anyone else who wants to try it:

Cheap machetes vary in heat treatment. Test it with a file or sharpening stone before you put any work into it -- and don't just test it in one place; test it all over.

If the factory didn't screw up the heat treatment machetes are tempered for toughness more than hardness -- good for a large chopping knife, not so great for a small whittling knife, but still usable if you don't mind sharpening a little more often.

Working tempered steel is slower going than working annealed steel and heat-treating when you're done, but it's a good way to get started in knifemaking. Be careful not to overheat it while grinding and ruin the temper. That's what slows you down, much more than the greater abrasion resistance of tempered steel, but if you want to avoid having to heat-treat it yourself you'll have to accept that and go slow.

You can use whatever power tools you have as long as you're cautious, or if you don't have any power tools machetes are not too hard to work with hacksaw and files.

As shown here a usable knife can be made very quickly; making it look good takes longer. Try it out and if you like it you can clean it up and polish it and end up with a knife that's as beautiful as it is functional.

Wear safety glasses!

If you do any more work on it after you've sharpened it fold cardboard over the edge and duct tape it.

Just a little masking tape over the edge is not good enough. Want to walk around with nine fingers the rest of your life telling people, "I didn't know a knife could cut through masking tape"?
