Likes & dislikes in knife websites

From my location, Northern Ireland, it is virtually impossible to handle knives before I buy :grumpy: Therefore I am at the mercy of two things. Firstly is the manufacturers website details and secondly is the reviews you find in places like this. The second is of course times better, both for the full story and better pictures.

One thing, which I personally need to see - and have to ask for  - is a photo of the knife in hand. Guaging size, fit and ergonomics without this advantage is very difficult. I find this one detail speaks 1000 words.

Just a small matter :p which means a lot to me :)

I would agree 100% on this. I too am unable to see knives in the flesh before getting them and there is no way Oz is going to get included in the otherwise excellent passaround system here on BF so LOTS of pictures and descriptions of the knife make purchase a lot less of a guessing game.

Another of my pet hates is that pictures of knives are nearly ALWAYS from one side only. I'm left handed so I like to see the other side too, is it likely to work for me? (Obviously this only applies to folders.).

A picture of the knife in hand is also invaluable. You can tell me the thing is so many centimetres long and so on, which is good, but actually seeing it in relation to somebodies hand is much better.

So, a few GOOD QUALITY pics from different angles and "in hand" would be my main request.

Chiro75, Just went to your web site looks real good so far, keep up the good
work. I have it posted in MY favorites for future use.

Have the pics professionally done unless you take the time learn how.
Great pics sell knives
Good idea to show factory stuff next to customs...going to try that one!

Another thing. If you make folders, then please provide pics showing the clip slide. I hate the fact that manufacturers rarely show the clips of their knives.

Kamagong, if I can make a folder worthy of selling, trust me, you'll see it from every side, angle, distance, vector, etc! :D

I like it, I'd like to see some photos on the front page, but so far I like it! I want that PERSONAL EDC, or one like it.

Just something else I thought of; try having all the thumbnails the same size, it helps give the site a uniform appearance.

Want orange peeler... soon ;)

A very nice job! It loads very quickly considering the somewhat advanced
appearance. The clever use of tables to mimic frames seems to really speed
things up. I may have to rethink my own web page.
Most of your bottons from the galery do not work because of
a glich or typo which did not strip out the surplus "/gallery/" from the links.
For example the "Home" button should link to:
http://www.chiro75knives.com/welcome.html
not;
http://www.chiro75knives.com/gallery/welcome.html
The "About Chiro 75" button should link to;
http://www.chiro75knives.com/aboutus.html
not;
http://www.chiro75knives.com/gallery/aboutus.html
etc.
At the risk of being roasted in public, what to you folks think about my
web page? http://www.ragweedforge.com/
I do use light print on a dark background, but only on the home page.
If it's really a problem I can find another combination.
For a while I was working on an alternate version, but it proved unpopular
and was difficult to write and maintain. http://www.ragweedforge.com/helle/helle.html
I find I almost have to do the page myself, at least the updates. I usually
make several minor changes daily as stock comes and goes. If I get an
email question about a product I usually add the information to the web
page as well as respond to the email.
Regarding the knife in hand question, I've thought about it, but it doesn't
really help unless the customer has the same size hand. That's why I try
to describe the handles as suitable for small, medium or large hands.
Any input on these things would be appreciated. I don't always have time
to check the forums daily, so if I don't respond immediately please don't
think I'm ignoring you. Thanks in advance,
R

Link problem has been fixed. I made relative links instead of absolute links. Just noticed this AM. Try it again when you get a chance and see if it works. It should...

This is really tough because all of the pics are proportioned differently. I guess I could include more/less background to proportion them diifferently, but it's a lot of work. It's a good suggestion, though!

Tables are really easy, Ragnar, but that's easy for me to say because I use Dreamweaver. Took me a long time to figure out how to use it, but the tables are nice because I can make it look like a frame, but it's still all just one page, and there are no of the annoying behaviors associated with frames. Thanks for all the input!

I've heard good things about Dreamweaver. I use notebook myself
but perhaps it's time to move up a bit.

I agree it's tough, but if it's something you bear in mind when you take more pictures it becomes easier.

Looking good :D

I've heard good things about Dreamweaver.
I've been using Dreamweaver on my Mac for a couple of years. I got a free copy of it, so I'm very spoiled. It's not very intuitive, though, so I bought one of those "Dreamweaver in 24 Hours" books and it was great. It was frustrating to learn at first, but once you get the hang of it it's cool. I use very few of the features. Just enough to make a passable site! :D For some reason I could never get Dreamweaver's FTP functions to work, so I just use Fetch and that is simple and awesome.

Wow - yellow text on a bright blue background! My eyes are STILL burning! If you're going to change anything on your website, that would be my first choice.

(just a bit of friendly criticism from someone who often ignores his own advice on his own website ;) )

I've changed it to match the rest of the web site. Do you like it better?
