Left out yesterday for some car camping on some state property. They have cut little two trails to cleared out spots along a local creek. They have fire pits, and some spots have picnic tables. Hunting is by draw for the first part of the season, but now it's open. Found a nice one not close to another and set up "the apartment."

I walked along the creek to a spot where I had seen several squirrel nests before, hoping to get a couple for supper. Ended up with these instead.

I took them back to camp, dressed them, then hiked to a higher area I had seen deer sign earlier in the year. Found a spot and marked it on the GPS so I could find it in the dark of morning. Back at camp, I started a fire and took one of the quail and browned it in the dutch oven.

I had brought a couple of cans of cream of mushroom to cook the squirrels in, but had never fixed a bird like this. Poured it and some water in, closed it up and let it simmer for awhile.

I didn't have a shovel or trough, so I improvised a coal scoop using the soup can.

It worked really well!

After it cooked for a bit, I threw in some rice and set it off the fire to slow cook.

Turned out pretty tasty.

This morning I got up and made it to my spot. Damn it was cold. I knew we had a front coming through, but I was not expecting the 20's, I should have brought warmer clothes. Right after daylight, I saw one doe. I sat a couple hours and never saw anything else. I made my way back to camp to cook up some breakfast. Bacon and bird, on the lid of the dutch oven.

That is a great meal you had there. I love using my cast iron dutch oven when truck camping. I make my girls and I a peach cobbler often times. Very easy to do, and a nice treat for around the fire.

I love quail meat. One of my favorites. Reminds me of Bald Eagle.

;) Kidding of course. :)

Now there's a man that loves his truck!

Nice... makes me hungry. Haven't had game bird in a while.

Where are you, South Carolina?

I just ate.. and I am hungry again.

Thanks for sharing the pics, sounds like you had a great time.

There is a NWR island close by. There are Bald Eagles and the loggerheads nest there during the summer. Nothing like green sea turtle egg omelets with eagle meat. Yummy. ;)

LMAO........:D

Great pictures, and nice kit. Never owned any Fallkniven knives, but according to many of the post I found in my searches, they are well regarded here.

Thanks for sharing.

Yea, for a second there I thought he was in my backyard.:D

Glad to see you having a good time, looks fun.

After re-reading your post, I took notice if your improvised coal scoop. Well done!

Several years ago I took my kids camping at lake Chelan with my Sister (whom I love dearly), and my Brother Inn Law (whom I tolerate because of previous sentence).

She wanted to make a Cherri cobbler after watching me make a peach cobbler the night before. We had all the ingredients, however we ran out of the briquettes brought up. No matter says I, just use the coals from the fire I'll make, and spread them under, and over the top of the dutch oven. The kids and I let out for a nice summer twilight hike, and to find what my girls call treasures (rocks, sticks, leaves, ect...). Two hours later we came back to see them staring at the oven sitting on the ground. Fire had HEAPS of coals to be used. Brother In Law..... "hey, glad you're back. Did you bring a shovel to pick up the coals with"?

I said nothing.... I just grabbed two kindling sticks and started placing coals on top of the oven. Yeah........ he is a high school teacher BTW.

Edited to add: Not that there is anything wrong with High School Teachers.

I have to say, I'm LIKING that "apartment as you call it ... How big of a bed does your truck have ?? I've got a 4' bed on my sport trac, and have been looking for something like that for mine, for quite a while ...

Any info would be appreciated...

Btw looks like some mighty fine meals you made in your dutch oven !!

Hehe. Sounds like a few guys I know. It's the blatantly obvious or overly simple things they have problems with.

It's a five foot bed. I got this one from Cabela's a couple years ago. Originally, I got it for beach camping, so I would be up out of the sand. But I found an inflatable bed that fits perfectly between the wheel wells. There is an outlet for the AC inverter in the bed of the truck, so I can plug the bed in to inflate. It is REALLY comfortable. Now, I use it any time I'm car camping. The tent attaches either to the stock bed rails, or in my case, the tonneau cover frame. Then it has straps that attach to the bottom outside of the bed. It's not going anywhere. In fact, I've driven down the beach with it on, at about 15 MPH.
