ok, here's the deal, just picked up a ffbm, love it/hate it...

i REALLY love most of it, but i honestly think it's a bit big/heavy for my intended use.

i am looking for a backpacking / camping / hiking / hunting blade...

BUT...
i am IN with the busse infi and workmanship/quality...

SOOOO, looking for a bit of help with the selection of a blade to meet my needs, please give a lil' help.
:)

From what I've heard, the FSH or Fusion Steel Heart is the way to go. If the ffbm is too much for your hands look into an '08 FSH SE or a Heavy Heart. I know there is at least one HH in the exhange right now for a good price.

Otherwise, look into the NMSFNO's that Busse is offering up through their website right now. 8" blade, convexed edge, variety of finishes and slab choices.

Either of this will make a great all-arounder.

For more info on the knives, check www.bussecollector.com and www.hogcult.com.

Good luck,

Jason

NMSFNO
if you want to go smaller: HR, skinny ASH, SFNO, SHe
even smaller: BATAC, SAR5

any of those would do fine for your needs

I just got a nmfbm and it is way to heavy to actually carry around. It would be fine strapping it to a pack instead of an axe but for a knife you can carry as a good all rounder you'd be hard pressed to beat a SJTAC. If you want a little bigger the NMSFNO might be good.

Would you want to carry just one knife or would you take 2/3. I don't think there is one knife which will do everything well, you're always going to have to sacrifice something (and I don't mean that kind of sacrifice before any says the NMFBM is best for sacrificing)

I would say go for a Big blade - FFBM/NMFBM for when you need a chopper and a BAD or Culti for general work !

That would be the BATAC!

Combat Grade FBM lazers through stuff and isn't like swinging a railcar leaf spring around. It's light enough to pack and hike with, but robust enough to do anything with. Or get ya a BATAC. Or NMSFNO, which is outstanding.

i vote nm sfno!

i got a little bit scared that i would not use my NM FBM since i got the NM SFNO.
because the the SFNO rocks! perfect size for me.
the batac seams to be a great knife to! got to get my hands on one of those!

If you want shorter and thinner get the NM SFNO, it will be the best deal available right now. If you just want lighter, try and trade your FFBM for a CG FBM which is thinner and better balanced IMO.

ASH-1, Skinny ASH or a BATAC come to mind unless you plan to be hacking trails through the wilderness. If you just need a little weight reduction then a FBM CG would fill the bill.

Get a CGFBM and an Active Duty and take both. You'll be ready for anything!

Go with a Game Warden (one of the thinner ones, .20" or less, preferably less) and an NMSFNO. With that combo, you can do the big stuff and the small, and it won't weigh ridiculously much. The NMSFNOs do make excellent do-it-all-knives, too, if you require chopping power. If you don't, then a Game Warden will do pretty well on its own.

While I think the SFNO is the best all-around knife, me thinks that he originally went with the FBM because he wants and needs a big knife. One size down from that is the FSH, which still gives you nice chopping action in a smaller package. The original SFNO is more of a mid-size blade, not really a chopper. The new SFNO is a better chopper. FSH is between that and your FBM.

One knife for all of that is a tough one to call. For hunting I would never go with a blade over 5in.

Most mentioned above are to big for what your looking for. Sounds like a BATAC would fit the bill nicely. CG, not the very thick and heavy LE.

My choice would be an ABA, but they are hard to find. Second would be a Meaner Street which is easy to find. If you don't need to chop with it I wouldn't go any larger.

Sold my FFBM the same day I got it, like you I found it way to heavy.

satin jack or a skinny ash would make a great camp/backpacking knife. large enough to baton and do wordworking chores but small enought to use for cooking/cleaning game.
