Limited Edition as EDC?

Hey Guys,

New guy here, Ralph. I'll make sure to make an intro thread later.

Nice forum, I'm glad to be here.

Anyway, my question is - I've been pondering the thought of carrying a limited release (in this case the Para 2 Brown) as an EDC. However, I can never get past the thought of maybe its best to keep it at home and just have it to look at :D lol.

How many of you fellas are able to EDC a limited or rare release? If so, how do you get past the initial thought of "it's a knife, it's meant to be used"?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

If you are a collector/investor, you won't want to use your LE. Sad, but true.

Personally, I'm always looking for a better EDC, like hunting for the perfect wave. The fun for me is to use these knives. I switch from time to time, but for a long time now I've been EDCing a frame lock Military LE in M4 steel. I think I get a lot more joy from using that knife that I would as a collector, taking it out from time to time to fondle it.

I edc one of these daily, it's just what they were made for and why I acquired them. And to be frank if I have a knife that doesn't see pocket time after a few months, it's up for sale.

That in mind I also tend to buy knives with finishes that don't tend to show that much wear, acid etch stonewash has been really good

Thanks for the reply, Twindog.

I am not a collector/investor so that part wouldn't apply to me. However, the thought of scratching the brown G10 on the P2 makes me cringe haha, especially since they've become so hard to come by

I EDC a limited run Sebenza Insingo 21 every day. If I can carry a $500+ knife every day, you can carry a sprint run Para 2, brother. All ya gotta do is put in your pocket and leave the house!

I've carried and used a few first productions. I've carried a GEC that there were only 4 made a couple times, never really used it though.

The question is, can you enjoy it even without using it ?
I personally don't like having stuff laying around that I don't use. Its wasted money to me.
I wouldn't worry too much about scratching G10, its a very tough material and if you really damage it, you can always get someone to make you a replacement scale.

Or get someone else to make the first scratches on it, it gets easier to use it if its scratched already :D

Unless you collect Hibben fantasy knives there is no reason not to use them.
1. You've either got to be extremely lucky, extremely knowledgeable or have perfect timing in order to make money as a collector.
2. Even with knife makers that have passed away, the best tribute to them is to use their knives
3, Knives with sentimental value...see #2
4. The only way to really enjoy the materials, design and engineering in them is to use them
5. If you can scratch G10, you're a lot rougher on your knives then I am

All these items are how I approach knives but have I do appreciation for other's views no matter how wrong they are

If you bought it specifically as a piece for your collection, then keep it in your collection. If not carry it! Bet you'll like it better as a user!!

I carry stuff you can't buy anymore all the time.

If you won't, who will? The guy you sell it to? Your relatives after you're in the dirt? Live life now man! Carry that thing and USE it!!!!

To get over the initial willies, just kick it down the driveway to your car. Put it our pocket and off ye go!

I switch off between a few knives for "edc" but I usually carry either a cruwear manix, or a one-of-a-kind custom mini grip. The manix would be hard to replace (that's why I have 2) but the mini grip can never be replaced since the clip and thumb stud were customized by me and cannot be bought anymore. The mini grip probably totals $300 with the custom scales, lanyard w/ bead, clip, and thumbstud.

Sure, these knives are nice to look at, but they are great users also. Who cares if you scratch it up, it's a tool, not a piece of art!

I have three NIB PM2's at the moment: S35VN, 204P, and Elmax. I've had about 20-30 other PM2's. They are all replaceable. Unless you have a S90V, I wouldn't worry about it at all. The s90V is quite a collector's item, but the others?...are just nice knives.
Use it. Enjoy it. When you're tired of it, sell it for a small discount.

If I'm afraid to use my knife, I just won't buy the knife. I don't have the money to have a wallflower that costs me a couple hundred bucks. Its money wasted. Sell it so somebody else can enjoy it and buy something you aren't afraid of using.
But its why I keep most of my purchase around the $100-200 mark, they are priced at where you don't feel too bad about using them. But I'm not a collector, I'm a user. Sure I like "collecting" knives, but these are knives that I actually use. Either for EDC or for innawoods.

Probably what irks me the most is seeing these people with several thousand of untouched steel squirreled away in their pelican cases. Those poor knives won't see anything tougher than paper or tomatoes. :grumpy:

Good god! I can't stand that!

That's like buying a rare vintage car, and only driving it on and off a trailor to go to auto shows:mad:

I have the brown PM 2 and the M390 PM2. I have carried both regularly for over a year. I do have limited edition knives I do not carry, like the ZT801CF. but the PM2s are made to use. the 801CF is just to pretty to damage. I guess it is up to you which knives are users and which ones are not. Everyone is different.

My PM2s see little pocket time now that I got my Sebenzas. They are more valuable than my PMs but to me are users too.

Some people have way too many knives to use them all, if you have like a hundred knives because your a collector, how many users do you need? I think its ok to have some knives just to admire. You only need a handful of knives to carry and use.

Thank you all for the overwhelming amount of replies! I agree with pretty much all of them. I am a watch collector as well, that being my main hobby and although I baby all my watches, none are stashed away in a safe.

I think I'm going to do what SalminKiller suggested, buy 2. That is, indeed, problem solved.
