Limited Edition as EDC?

Good god! I can't stand that!

That's like buying a rare vintage car, and only driving it on and off a trailor to go to auto shows:mad:

Amen! I ride my motorcycle to the trailer rally all the time! Their bikes sure look glittery rolling out of all those air conditioned trailers... And not a hair out of place! Just a block to the strip - pose - perpetrate - back on the trailer. Makes me laugh!

I can't stand not using my knives either. If they don't get used, they get traded or sold. Pretty quickly.

I switch off between a few knives for "edc" but I usually carry either a cruwear manix, or a one-of-a-kind custom mini grip. The manix would be hard to replace (that's why I have 2) but the mini grip can never be replaced since the clip and thumb stud were customized by me and cannot be bought anymore. The mini grip probably totals $300 with the custom scales, lanyard w/ bead, clip, and thumbstud.

Sure, these knives are nice to look at, but they are great users also. Who cares if you scratch it up, it's a tool, not a piece of art!

to some it is a tool and a piece of art.

Probably what irks me the most is seeing these people with several thousand of untouched steel squirreled away in their pelican cases. Those poor knives won't see anything tougher than paper or tomatoes. :grumpy:

Good. Then you shouldn't do that.

As for other people, if they want to do that...good for them! They are their knives. People should do whatever they want with their knives. Vacuum seal them. Sit on the couch flicking them. Throw them at trees. Whatever makes them happy.

Sometimes, rarely, I don't want to use it. Sure "you only live once" but some things are simply meant for collecting and looking pretty.

Part of my edc rotation are three Spyderco sprint runs, a brown Military, a brown and a grey Paramilitary 2.
I don't buy things that I wouldn't use.

I feel the knife you are afraid to use is a knife that owns you, you dont own it. Life is just waaay to short for that nonsense. Use it and enjoy it. In time it will be more beautiful to your eyes than any new knife. And its not like you will never have 300 dollars to buy some other special short run knife in the future.

It's all about the owner's (us) enjoyment after all. Hobbies such as ours should be fun.

My approach is buying two of a LE knife I really like if possible. One to use and one as a preneed replacement... Worst case scenario, it's like money in the bank lol.

I sure understand the worry.. when you look at something, and ask yourself if you are beating up something that could double or triple in value if you didn't, you question using it.

But i put 2 folders like that (my Recon 1 XHP, and Kershaw Elmax blur) to use anyway, and realized what i first thought; the investment is paid back in getting to carry and use a knife i enjoy every day. The value is in owning something, at least somewhat unique (the kershaw was fun to show off to some other knife guys, who hadn't seen that model), and getting to use it. After all.. they don't make these things with razor edges to sit collecting dust, no?

The legend of the dragon in most cultures speaks against just having: "safe queens" and vastly favors having experience over just "having!" Think about it. The dragon hoards virgins and gold and can't use either one! He just needs to have them and to have others know he has them! Wrong! OK, if you're not into the meaning of myths then look at it this way: EVERYTHING you own will one day belong to someone else! EVERYTHING! It MIGHT be treated with some respect by your immediate heirs but one day someone will just be picking their toenails with it more than likely. I hunt with a $1,300 take-down longbow, beautiful woods etc. It doesn't have "scratches" it has "scars"-fond memories of great hunts!....I'd shoot Wyatt Earp's gun if I owned it just to have that awesome experience and to hell with what something is worth! I will respect that others get off just looking at something. To each his own. But I just can't relate to them! :-) That being said I have a Beretta Peerless with all that gold inlay stuff that I bought at an auction for charity. I'm going to sell it as I can't stand looking at it unused! Or I might just use it! :)

I have knives I collect and knives I use. Some of my CRK's will never see the light of day. The difference is the value I have placed on them to determine what gets used. If you feel the value/rarity of the knife warrants you not using it, then don't. You may be a collector deep down inside. :)

This is a good question, only you can answer.
Since you asked: Use it - enjoy it.

We buy things for different reasons.
A piece of a collection has more than it's original use, think about stamps.

I agree with Ajack60. Some you use, some you don't.
I recently bought a well used HD7 PS, and this is my user.
Welcome, Ralph.

Surely a personal thing, your own views and what/how you think should guide you.
Myself, I have never yet bought a knife I wont carry and use. To me they are tools.
I have Sprint Run folders and carry and use them all, including an S35VN Para 2, Elmax Para 2, Damascus Stretch, Super Blue Delica, S90V Military. They are all made to be used and I thoroughly enjoy using them, sharpening them, learning their individual characteristics.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you know you are super hard on your knives.

Also, is the brown pm2 officially discontinued? I thought it was limited production through a distributor like the bento box pm2 and they could order more whenever they want.
