Just curious how many of you actually use your limited edition knives and how many buy them and put them away or just display them? I ask because I recently traded for a mint limited edition folder and I’m really tempted to use it. Stupid idea?

Use them.
Almost all my favourite carry knives are discontinued, or sprint runs, or such.
First time I carried my prototype Benchmade Resistor I used it at work to cut a rubber hose...and there was glass stuck inside it!
Brand new, beautiful edge turned to a rolled mess.
But that's what sharpening is for. ;)

You’re renting it while you enjoy your brief time on Earth. No telling what happens to it after you die. So use it!

It depends, I've bought some and used them, others I've kept minty and turned a profit or at least broke even years later.

My daily carry knife is a dealer exclusive Spyderco.

I see no reason to let it sit in it's box hoping it goes up in value. Besides the dealer could always order another run or two making it less "exclusive".

I get more pleasure using it than looking at it.

Who are you saving it for that will appreciate it more than you? Even if you say your son or daughter etc. which knife will they prefer more? A knife that their dad used alot that has dad’s marks all over it? Or a minty knife that has no connection other than you owned it?

Your knife though, do what you want. Knives as an investment is not a great profit making strategy.

At some point I realized I bought my knives specifically to enjoy. Which basically means carry and use. It’s been awesome and my safe couldn’t care less.

Damn thing is a tool. Use it.
That ^^^ was a little harsh. Sorry. As an example I just got a BM Vallation first production model. It was in my pocket, and working the very next day. Use 'em.

If you can't decide, Flip a coin, and whatever side you hoped it landed on while it was still in the air, go with that decision. Don't even bother checking the coin.

The answer to the question is, as I see it, why did you buy it?

Did you buy it as an investment, to sell for a profit at a later date?

There are a few people who will hold on to a knife and may make a tidy profit someday.

Or the knife may fall out of favor an you’ll be lucky to get what you paid for it.

If you bought it because you like it, use it.

It may or may not be worth much in the future.

I generally use them eventually although I may drag my feet about using them for a while. It boils down to whether I need to use it and I suppose want to use it.

Most knives are not good investments. Customs/handmade?..... well they may be more valuable to you, but even if the maker dies, chances are that within a short time, nobody will remember their great knives. There are of course exceptions but the reality is that you have to be willing to sell it and the value means little if you aren't willing to sell. That is sort of my problem and has been. I finally started selling off my Colt collection slowly. Some of these guns I have owned for more than 30 years. I don't own any knives that I would consider investment worthy. So, if that's you, use it and enjoy the knife, or tuck it away for a while.

Some "limited edition" knives are display pieces with no practical advantages over tge regular version of that knife. For instance, I've got a Victorinox Pioneer with Elsener's signature on the main blade. I use my other Pioneers and keep that one as a safe queen.

On the other hand, if what makes the limited edition knife in question special is something that improves performance or the way it looks, I'll use it like any other knife. For instance, my BM 710 in 390 gets a ton of pocket time.

I do have a couple with sentimental value that see little to no use. Other than that I buy them to enjoy them and for me that means using them. Most of my knives are limited editions, sprint runs or discontinued models.
