What do you think? I've been looking for a suitable Spydie for a while but I can't seem to find anything special enough to warrant dropping that much cash when I already have a Benchmade 550-1. Are there any Para 2s out there that you'd consider a better option than this one?

Just look at Sprint runs in tool steel. There were a few this year and there will be more next season.

It depends what you want to do with it. If you plan on using it for hard use I would worry about the tip, it's very thin and pointy if you want something a little more robust you should consider the Manix 2. S30, S35, S110, M390 are all steels that are available that do not rust. these are all available in the PM2 model. I'm not quite sure what SavageSick was referring too, There are a few steel's that the Para2 come in but you don't need to look at those such as M4 52100. If you are looking for a knife that is similar in design to the Grip you should look at the Gayle Bradley 2. The only problem with that one is the blade is M4 and will rust if you don't care for it.
I have 7 different Para 2's and I only carry the S30, S35 and the S110. The S110 is a bastard to polish but holds the edge for a long time.

Again I am confused or I must be not seeing something but who was recommending 52100. I mentioned it in my repl as one of those that rust.

Didn't see the link at first.

Yes that would be a nice example of a tool steel sprint run of a PM2. The nice thing about those is that if you find it's not to your taste you can usually turn them over on here since demand outstrips supply.

I recommend 52100. It's a fine steel for an acquired taste.

Tool steels make very nice EDC's. If it gets wet, wipe it off. It may/will patina after a while, but that is a good thing...and many folks will purposely "create" patina by application of things like mustard, various peppers, onions, apples, etc.

I think I saw a sprint run of a manix 2 in m4 with natural g10. Looked awesome to me. I love my manix but absolutely hate s30v. It doesn't hold an edge nearly as good as my griptilian but otherwise they are AMAZING.

Op what will you be doing with your sprint run? Light use, hard use or safe queen?

I've got a military in cf and 52100. I coat the blade with fluid film to avoid patina and rust. You can also use mineral oil instead but will likely need to be re applied more often. As long as you keep it dry and oiled you should have very little issues. And force patina looks really awesome too if you decide to go that way. Still oil or keep dry.

I also have an m4 cf pm2 that I also applied fluid film too also to stop any patina from happening.

It's a very nice steel. Excellent toughness and edge stability. Decent edge retention.
If you want something stainless they have other sprints. Some with cf and some without.

Any PM2 is good to go, it just boils down to what flavor do you want? 52100 steel in that PM2 is very tough stuff, and holds an edge pretty well too. However, if your not careful it will rust on you. One way to combat that is to force a patina, or let one develop over time.

I personally like tools steels that will patina in folders. I consider that the best PM2 for my preferences(only because the M4 one is discontinued and demands a higher price).

52100 steel is a rust-magnet. Great for those that require toughness in their work.

If you're not In too harsh of an environment, let I'd develop a great nice patina, and know how to maintain carbon steel then it shouldn't be guaranteed to rust.

In the original post look at the link the OP posted. He was specifically asking about a 52100 PM2 peel ply CF.

I was looking at your profile page; didn't see where abouts on the globe you live.
My favorite blade steel / alloys rust or tarnish but I am in a high plains desert near 7,000 ft.
Translation : never any mold in my closits.

As far as the "weak" tip you will have to decide for how you work if it is too weak.
Personally I look at my 940 and think "why" and have to restrain myself from grinding it thinner.
Right now (for the last couple of months) the Para 2 in a tarnishable steel has been my favorite work knife. Partly because of the tip shape and especially because of the steel alloy. I don't see that ever changing and the way I have been going through knives that is really saying something, every thing from Case Trappers in CV rust if you breath on it steel (I still LOVE it) to fixed blades like the Cold Steel Pendleton Hunter in 3V as my every day work knife. The Para2 in high alloy tool steel SURE DOES IT FOR ME !

And like Danke42 says don't like it sell it. Maybe to me; but not until next Spring or Summer.
