Ok, I get it now Jackyl. But I would still rather have a plain knife made by Tim Herman than an equivalently priced knife made by any of the makers you mentioned. Why? Lots of reasons. Some are hard to define because they are intangibles.
I think the slivers design is simple, elegant, and gorgeous. I like the idea that it has No visible screws or pivot pin. I think it is interesting that Tims construction requires no washers to provide smooth operation. The plain sliver will still be a sole authored Herman knife. I have never handled one of Tims knives and buying this knife will give me a chance.
At the price, I think I will feel comfortable actually carrying and using the knife. Part of the appeal is that Because the knife will be simple and not finished to a high degree of polish, I wont have to worry as much about messing it up. And its a Herman! (did I mention that before?)
I have been shopping for a custom every day carry for a few months. It is true that in this price range there are a lot of really nice knives. And although I love damascus and pearl, I haven't purchased a fancy gents folder in part because I would be afraid to actually carry and use many of the knives I see and like. I have been looking at the work of John Etzler and Al Dippold, among others. But I think (hope) that the plain sliver will more than make up for its lack of exotic material, engraving, or other embellishment with its sheer simplicity and beauty of form. And I really want to find out how it works as a knife.
