My dad always used military surplus LBE for carring stuff when hunting.

A fellow cadet that went through the academy with was an ex-SEAL.

I just gont the latest Black Hawk Catalogue.

The SEALs proritize the gear they carry with them. The first line gear consists of E&E gear. A pistol, a knife, a pocket survival kit, a map, a compass. This is stuff all carried on your person or trouser belt. I carry a Glock 21, map, compass, 2 knives (this is blade forums), a pocket kit, and a couple of candy bars. Theoretically I can live for 3 days on this stuff without much else. Food is not an issue at this point, and my pocket kit carries a condom and water purification tabs. A little water is all I will need. Note that APPROPRIATE clothing is included.

2nd line gear consists of the LCE. In the teams it is your weapom, ammo, first aid, canteens, ect. Everything you need to shoot and scoot. My LCE is mil surplus (still building it, may switch to a Black Hawk vest). When hunting it consists of a rifle, ammo, another map and compass, canteen (1qt) with cup, stove, carrier, trioxane, camel back hydration system, (I live about 30 miles from the Mexican border, water is important) water filter. There is a fanny pack with a tarp, poncho, poncho liner, socks, MREs, cord, tinder kit, small cook set, and a first aid kit. Theoretically I can live out of my LCE for 5 days.

3rd line gear consists of ruck with all the stuff the SEALs need to get them where they are going and do thier job. Sleeping bags, shelter, more med stuff, food, water, "accessories". This is my bugout bag. Theoretically you can live for 2 weeks+ without resupply, provided you have water.

The ruck also has tools and fresh clothes. In an area where I can resupply or hunt you can go for a long, long time and disappear.

Whattya think? Are others this anal about their gear? I mean when I go in the woods (car camping) I ALWAYS have my first line gear. While hunting or fishing or hiking more than an hour or two I have my second line gear, and my third line gear is my camp.

I carry a few things in my pockets ALL the time for my first line. But this does not include a fixed blade knife or firearm.

My second line could be considered my belt kit or my fanny pack. This would also sometimes be supplemented with fixed blade knife and a poncho. Usually this is carried in an urban setting or on a day outing shopping etc.

Another second line could be my day pack when out hunting. I would usually have most of my belt kit and a few other items. A firearm may be included unless I'm bowhunting.

Then I have my actual LBE's. These are a combat survival item. They always contain ammo for a long arm and a sidearm. One has my .44 gear with a Redhawk. The other has my 1911 and stuff for my L1A1.

Finally, I have my Medium Alice pack setup as a BOB. It has all the niceties that can be lived without.

Hence I have a layered system, but it isn't always linked to a combat mode. It is more of a situational usage. The BOB goes in the trunk when we go overnight somewhere. But I limit the LBE and firearm carry since I'm in IRT!
