I bought this knife off the Bay from a fella for $47 total. It had what the box called walnut inlay but it just looked kind of gray to me. So I put ziricote and SS pins on it and that didn't turn out. The pin grinding got to hot (works good with brass) and scorched the ziricote. So I took that off and put on some black linen micarta with a bit of a palm swell. Thought it was interesting enough looking to share.

The pictures where a little dark so I lightened them some. The middle is about what it looks like to the eye.

Nice work FL. Putting that palm swell on the scales really brought out the layers in the Micarta.....

Hey thanks guys. I'm really pleased with this one. I guess I'll have to say I prefer the linen over canvas...at least at the moment. This is a little better picture on the scale. I see that the picture shows some scratches (and a fingerprint) in the bolsters. Maybe I'll work those out later today. Anyway, I purchased some rouge called Zams from Texas Knife Makers Supply and it does a good job polishing.

The palm swells give a whole different feel to the knife. Very nice actually.

I've gotten myself roped into doing two more knives for my wife's other two Uncles....danged if I know how I did that...well back to the shop then.

Great Job on the scale match up it can be pretty tough to get zero gap when you are profiling the scales by hand. I like the choice of material aswell canvas dosent show near the character that linen does.

Ok fellas, I will ask, What is palm swell? Sounds like something really personal to me!

LOL....Harry you are a funny man. He is not talking about something swelling in his palm:eek:.

Palm swell is when the middle of the scale is fatter and tapers to meet the bolster. In this scale when Gordon sanded it and left it fatter in the middle of the scale it brought out the pattern on the linen micarta.

Ok Gordon,

As you keep making customs for your family....when can I send you a 110 or two for a tune up? We are Buck Brothers aren't we;)? Yes I am putting you on the spot!!!

Simply fantastic work Gordon.

JB,

Get yourself a knife you want to exchange scale on and find the inlay (wood or Micarta) you want (ebay is a good place for both...I suspect you have the knife already) and send all that to me and I'll do it.:)

wow that micarta looked great!
buck did a micarta later in the 110 but left it flat..
like the swell..you are getting good at this..!
i will be starting on some rubber buckies tomorrow..

I have a harmonica case I made in the 70's out of Koa...I'm reallt tempted to sacrfise the back side for a few 112 scales...Koa for the CS 112's was 40.00 or so...It sure is my fav wood..

Very nice job on those inlays! :)
When you put a radius on micarta, you have to be careful to make sure it is the same on both sides because the layers will look lopsided if you dont. You nailed it!
