OK, I have a question that's a real head scratcher. Not sure how others do this, but I epoxy liners to handle scales first and let them cure before fitting to them to the tang. Recently I started a set that would have a double liner with one being brass and the other being red fiber. When I began finishing the fronts where they would meet the blade, the brass immediately separated completely from the scale and the fiber is separating from the brass around the edges. I roughed up the brass and wiped everything down with denatured alcohol. I use West Systems epoxy if that makes any difference. What did I do wrong and what is the best way to accomlish this?

Thanks all....

You're possibly overheating it in the shaping. It's one of the reasons I hate doing copper or brass liners.

Yep, you are most likely over heating- best to use a higher temp adhesive like Loctite 325. When using a metal liner, use brand new sharp belts on a very low speed and keep wiping with a damp rag to help cool off.

+ one on John's comment. I just recently learned this and it takes .000000000001 seconds to get too hot and brass/copper transfers the heat to the glue and the glue fails. Maybe even quicker....

Thanks all. It's been about a week, but it seems like it happened almost when I initially touched it to the grinder. Based on what you are saying, it sounds like it can happen that quick. So now I have a challenge that I accept! I have an idea, so we'll see how that goes.

@pleasanthill Are you from Pleasant Hill in the Greer area? I understand there is a "community" by the same name near Loris which is not too far from me.

I ran into that problem with brass liners before. To fix the problem, I temporarily pinned the scales and liners to the knife and rough ground it all together. I glued it all back together after shaping it, and only hand sanded once it was all glued up.

I'm in Pleasanthill community near Georgetown. Georgetown is about 20 mins from me. Hemingway, Johnsonville. Our address is actually Hemingway.

get the pieces closer to shape before applying adhesive. then rough shape with a file, you will not create enough heat to ruin the bond.
