liner-lock retention ball?

Could anyone tell me where the retention ball goes in a liner lock knife? I know it may be a dumb question but i simply do not know.

The only dumb one is one not asked...
The little ball bearing is usually located on the end of the spring locking mech. and rides on the blade until hitting the detent.
Other vari-s use detent and coil spring etc but it invariably is located to be close to the pivot part of the blade. I'm not an expert by any means but this has been my exper.

Thanks Goshawk, I though it had be related to the spring-lock some how.Has anyone ever seen a book on building liner-lock folders?
