i want to achive a polished finish on my black liner material, solid color. the g 10 looks as if it may leave more of a dotted white line effect even though it's only .030", that will matter. i already bought the g10 , thinking it was a better product, less likely to shrink or warp. i did my research once and picked the g10. Larry makes beautiful work and he's got me leaning to the vulc... stuff. can i salvage the g10 , or chalk this one up? so , which do we use to get a polished, solid color that stays flat, and does not lift off ? THANKS ALL.

G-10 polishes up very nicely.....just look at the early polished G-10 Ken Onion knives from Kershaw. I can say that the dotted white look you're worried about most likely will not be an issue with liners that are only .030" thick.

Personally I stay away from the vulcanized material for reasons you already mentioned, warping, instability with temp changes, peeling.....I have used it in the past with not so good results. G-10 on the other hand has NEVER been an issue as a liner material and I've used it on hundreds of knives. Some very reputable makers have had success with the vulcanized stuff but for me it's not the right choice.

I dont think you will have an issue with the G10 at that thickness. Another option would be paper micarta but you wont find it that thin likely. It will polish to a perfect gloss black.

We use g10 and micarta for liners. Vulcanized fiber is an unstable foundation to build a handle on.

Edited to add: YMMV

I'm starting to have failure on a test blade with the vulcanized crap, the G-10 it's sandwiched between still looks new.
You can get the g-10 shiny if you take it to 800 grit and buff lightly with pink compound.
