I made my mother a kitchen knife for Christmas and when using it last weekend I realized that they vulcanized fiber liners had swollen alot. Anyone else have this issue. I also heard of people using very thin g10 or micarta, where is this available for sale.

Thanks

John

Hey John.

I found a few threads about liners swelling--most of them were used on-------kitchen knives.

Sheffield's Supply has G10 and Micarta down to .125 but I haven't found anything thinner yet--will keep looking.

Have a good one!

Michael

Edit: Looks like Alpha Knife Supply has what you're looking for: http://www.alphaknifesupply.com/micarta.htm

Here's a source for really thin g-10 sheets in a few colors.

I'm really growing tired of the vulcanized material also. Seems in addition to the swelling, sometimes I have trouble getting it to bond with epoxy or glue. One time it bonds fine, the next hardly at all.

I get my G10 for liners from Alpha Knife Supply, I just got a sheet of .046, using it right now as we speak as a liner. you can still see a little grain when you clean it up but I don't care. I had a knife come back with my best handlework cause of water intrusion and the wood separated from the liner and tang. Pisses me off cause it was a smokin hot piece of teak burl.

looks like alpha has black, green, blue and red covered for my uses. If I could find white I would have all bases covered. If any one knows of some please post a link.

The g-10 from Alpha Knife Supply is some pretty great stuff. Just so you know, the red g-10 is brick red instead of a vibrant red.

I've been looking for g-10 in bright red and white for a while now without any luck. I just got a sample of red and white engraving stock from Texas Knife Supply but it is really brittle stuff and I haven't tried it out yet.

I have heard of folks using thin plastic such vinyl. A word of warning - many of these "alternative" materials don't bond well and will be the weak link in your joint. G10 and micarta should have very good bond strength potential because the materials used in their construction but I'd stay away from things like vinyl and other plastics.
