Sal,

I think Spyderco knives are great I own more of them than anything else in my collection, pop into SFO frequently and know the gang there. I am a fan of your product. But recently, I have been hearing various people criticize Spydie for not including liners in many of their models. Usually, I just shrug it off.

Do you have an official position on this?

Thanks,

Bob, please see my post "StarMate and Military" which addressed just exactly that issue. Sal did not respond to it, but neither did he reject it. I seem to remember him sayng that G-10 did not need liners as it was plenty strong enough on its own, so that he only put the liner in for the lock.

Bob - We use single or double liners depending on the model and the use.

The Centofante, Military & Starmate use one full liner but it's nested into the G10 scale. The G-10 scales are strengthened to create the load strengths and ridity that we require. The clip and back spacer screw into the liner. They are very strong and still light. The lanyard hole is "stepped" to provide additonal strength and ridigity. This is both difficult and expensive to do...much more so than slapping on a couple of liners that are really only as strong as the pins holding them.

Micarta requires double liners as it is not as strong as G-10.

The Police, Civilian, Standard and Harpy G-10 versions use a single liner to give something strong enough for the clip to screw to.

"No more than is necessary and no less than perfect" is the goal.

Bob, I must assure you that we "make 'em right". IMO more so than the "other guys".

Thanx for the concern & the question. Hope that helps. Also thanx for the kind words and support

Single liner on the Standard G10?? Don' t see it on mine. Sal, are you mistaken or did someone leave it out on my model in the assembly process??

Sal, I noticed that my G-10 Standard has the liner while my G-10 Navigator does not. Is this because clip put is assumed less on smaller knife or did you change this on newer ones?

Nakano - You probably have an earlier model.

Beam - The Navigator never had a problem.

Sal, how early is early? Mine has a ATS 55 blade. Were all G10 Standards made with this from the get go?

Sal,

My Micarta Calypso Jr has no liners. Its not had any problems.

I would think that if the only reason for liner was just to hold the clip screws, a small piece same thickness as the liner could be epoxied a machined recess in the G-10. This piece would be just large enough to take the screws.

But hey, who am I to suggest to you how to make knives?
