Has anyone or does anyone line their kydex sheaths with something to prevent the sheath from scuffing the blade? And if there is such an amazing thing...how do you do it... I kinda have the feeling that this should be in maintenance tinkering and embellishment or even the sheaths section, so if I get moved ar need to get moved please do so... Thanks

I have heard of Moleskin being used, but i can't see how that would last all that long. I am curious to this, too.

do you mean real moleskin or the stuff you put on blisters? I know it doesnt sound right about the moleskin for blisters but thats the only other moleskin i
know of... and any kind of hide I think wouldnt last long either ... well maby if you dont line the side with the edge and such you might be ok for awhile... Ide really like to see if there really is a soultion to my delema.

thanks for the reply.

Something that might solve your issue with the kydex scuffing the blade(s):

Before you mold the kydex to the knife, cover the blade/guard/and whatever portion of the handle may fit inside the sheath, with a couple of layers of masking tape. It gives that extra couple of thousandths room, and keeps the sheath from scuffing the blade.

In the locations where the kydex "grips" the knife, you have to design the knife with using kydex in mind...that means using materials that will withstand the kydex rubbing on it, and also creating a knife profile that lends itself to easy insertion and removal from a kydex sheath.

There's a lot more to it than just taking any knife, and deciding you want to make a kydex sheath for it. The knife, the materials, and how the kydex sheath is designed all play a part.

thanks Ed,

I thought about doing the masking tape thing but I thought that the lines of the masking tape would cause lines in the kydex... The knife is a simple skinner design. The same one I have In a WIP thread I posted in earlier today so its not too hard to take out of the sheath due to design. Maby Ill Wrap the balde with tape and re heat with a heat gun to see if that works.

thanks

Andrew

You can use painter's tape(big home impovement store, painting section, couple bucks) as i have seen it in all different widths, so if you find one large enough to cover the blade, then no lines. also, i was talking about moleskin that you put on your skin for cuts. I know, i can't see it working all that great either. Perhaps glueing a piece of felt to the inside of the kydex(a glue that will withstand the heat) before putting it all in the press? just thinking...

As stated above, tape is a must. I put two layers on each side of a blade to be moulded. It gives that small bit of room. The main thing is that it is NOT the Kydex that is scratching your blade. It is any grit that may be on your blade or in the sheath that cause the problem. Your knife blade is harder than the kydex. This kind of sheath does not give like leather so there can be friction between the blade and sheath when there is some type of grit in it.

+1

As such, lining it could actually make it worse by making grit lodge into the liner.
