I figured should ask before I spend more cash;

A site here up in Canada has both of these knives and relatively same price range (SR2 being about 30$ more)
I'm looking for a compact, workhorse with a new steel I haven't tried yet; I like the Sr2 for its thumb studs as I prefer them over most but the Techno has the CTS-XHP steel I've been wanting to try.

Any advice/comments would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The DPx HEAT/F folder made by LionSteel is closer in size to the Spyderco Techno. LionSteel SR-2 has the clear advantage in blade length.

  • Spyderco Techno: CTS XHP steel, 2.55" blade length, 0.18" blade thickness, titanium frame lock, titanium handle
  • DPx HEAT/F: Sleipner steel, 2.4" blade length, 0.18" blade thickness, titanium frame lock, G-10 back
  • LionSteel SR-2 Aluminum: Sleipner steel, 3.1" blade length, 0.16" blade thickness, aluminum frame lock, aluminum handle

Tough call. You're looking at two small overbuilt folders of similar size, price, and quality - I would say it comes down to blade shapes. The Techno has something more like a modified sheepsfoot blade while the SR2 has a straightback blade. For day-to-day tasks, I prefer more forward-facing tips so I would say Techno. The SR2 is much better looking, IMO.

My choice would be the Techno as far as usage, but a part of me might sacrifice a slight utility advantage for the SR2 just on appearance alone (and I like that the lockbar has a steel insert)

Can anybody tell me about the CTS-XHP and Sleipnir steels?

CTS-XHP is touted as a stainless steel D2. Sleipner has great wear resistance and although not stainless it has fairly good corrosion resistance. Sleipner is used in commercial meat processing blades due its ability to retain sharpness after long hours of cutting.

I've not had the others, but I have great fondness for the Techno. It's a super-duty blade, with good steel, in a small package.

Dangit, i was firm on getting the Techno but now, the Sr2 looks super tempting.

Let me increase the temptation with the SR-2 Alumimum Orange:

Just to muddy the waters a bit, my friend. Make sure you are aware that one has aluminum scales; the other has titanium.
Sorry to mess with you.

Thanks for the heads up.
I think I'll be fine with the Aluminum, my go to retailer doesnt have the titanium version but I Can live with how beautiful the knife is and I'm pretty excited to try out the steel.

SR-2 Aluminum is definitely value priced. It's the same Sleipner steel blade in both the titanium and aluminum. Both one-piece frames milled from a solid piece of either Ergal Aluminum (strong and expensive) or 6Al4V Titanium so they're very strong.

Fellow Canuck here...could you PM me w/ the name of the store....thanks!

If at all possible, find a store or friend that has either one and personally handle each, the best way to decide.
The Sr2 is definitely attractive, for me I prefer the tough build of the Techno., the Ti. scales and the less is more design.
I'm able to mod the Techno via backspacer, anodize the scales if I choose, have the scales textured if I choose.

I like the feel of the techno, unfortunately I can't find a sr2 in store. Is the techno a good slicer?
