If you want a pry-bar-tough near-indestructible scandi woodlore, this would be the one. I wouldn't make this again intentionally. I mistakenly used a piece of 3/16 that I though was 5/32 to cut this blade out for an order. Didn't realize my mistake until I ground the bevel. It's a tank, but still has a nice, balanced feel.
Also, I used an end cut piece of natural micarta for the handle. 12x12 sheets get cut into 2 5x12 pieces for scales and that leaves about 1.75x12 leftover. I thought this end cut was canvas, but turns out it's linen, so that's a bonus too.
blade grind: scandi
serial number: 17
blade: 5″
overall length: 10″
steel: 3/16 80CrV2 @ 61.5 Hc
handle: blast finish natural linen micarta
handle thickness: 4/5
hardware: black canvas micarta pins and tube
sheath: includes custom sized right handed JRE sheath with dangler and firesteel loop
I began making PL knives in 2016. I've done leather work for over 20. I added kydex to my repertoire in the last few years. The heat treat on all of my carbon steel knives is done by me in a thermostatically controlled Evenheat knifemaking kiln. Each 80CrV2 blade goes through a multi-stage normalization before being heated to austenitic temperature and quenched in Parks quench oil. Then it goes through a 2 stage tempering process. 80CrV2 Hardness is approx. 61 hc and my heat treat process produces a blade with extreme toughness and fine edge sharpenability. Scales are glued with West Systems G-flex epoxy. My aim is to produce heirloom quality tools with excellent craftsmanship that will provide a lifetime of enjoyment and service.
