I am not familiar with cryo treatment for blades with LN. Do the blades need to be in the liquid itself or do they get the same treatment being inside the dewar even though not completely submerged in the liquid?

The important thing here is the actual blade being in the LIN, not so much the handle/tang.

There are differing opinions about how quickly to submerge the ENTIRE blade. In fact, most recommend to submerge entire blade before any tempering or to submerge after a snap temper (I always snap temper first and highly recommend that). I have always submerged my blades quickly, without any pause. I always have left in liquid nitrogen a minimum of 12 hours and usually several hours longer, up to about 24 hours. About 10 to 12 hours should transform the retained austenite. Cryogenic treatment will not temper the steel. Always temper as per you otherwise would AFTER cryogenic treatment.
