As per Brogan's suggestion adding Cowry-X makers as well ;)
Can we make a list of the makers/manufacturers using ZDP-189 and Cowry-X?

Manufacturers/Semi customs:

  • Fallkniven - Cowry-X
  • G-sakai - ZDP-189
  • Henckel - MD67(AFAIK very similar to ZDP or Cowry)
  • Ichiro Hattori - Cowry-X
  • Kershaw - ZDP-189
  • Moki - ZDP-189
  • Rockstead - ZDP-189
  • Spyderco - ZDP-189
  • Sanetsu (Japanese kitchen knife maker) - ZDP-189
  • William Henry - ZDP-189

Custom Knife Makers:

  • Koji Hara - ZDP-189
  • Yuna - ZDP-189

Yuna IS a custom maker. He makes everything by hand. I don't know where you got the idea that Yuna knives are semi-custom.

Oh god..... (insert face palm picture here).

Srsly, I could make a couple hundred identical chairs by hand, and they would all be custom> correct?

depends on who you ask. People call a maker like Bob Dozier a custom maker, and his knives have model numbers. Yuna does take orders.

yeah, I prefer to call handmade knives... handmade, and a knife I get made to order, or a one off from the maker's imagination... a custom.

I got an idea about Yuna after skimming through website. More like models. I did say semi-custom though.

Allrighty :) I've moved Yuna to customs. I don't feel like getting into another argument over classification. No offense to Yuna fans. Peace...
I'm just looking for ppl who make Knives out of that steel.

P.S. Is YXR7 steel used by Rockstead same as ZDP-189 or something else?

You might want to include S90V. It's the equivilant.
Do you mean S90V is equivalent of ZDP-189? It's a different steel from Crucible and chemical composition is quite different. Unless I'm missing something here.

It's something else, I think. The two ZDP Rocksteads I saw were their NEHAN and GI models.

ZDP-189 is pretty much Hitachi's knock-off of Cowry-X (aka kauri-x and a bunch of other spellings), so please consider adding Ichiro Hattori to your list.

Ok, I guess I'll combine the list for Cowry-X and ZDP-189 then. AFAIK Hattory only uses Cowry-X.

Fallkniven makes a knife with a damascus blade and cowry X cutting edge. (NL5cX Idun)

Kind regards,
