I participate in reenactments and renaissance faires, and it's high-time I made myself an eating utensil. I borrowed a friend's garage, found a hunk of unknown steel, and I made a little blade. Tools used were a throatless shear (To cut out the rough outline,) a hammer for decorative dimpling, and a belt grinder. Here's a picture of it in my hand for a size comparison.

Here's a little 'beauty' shot, because I felt bored.

Just a little something to practice my grinding till I can get good steel. In due course, there'll be a slab handle.

Good first attempt. See if you can find the "Knives and Scabbards" book published by the Museum of London it is one of the best references for what is actually common period designs. You should avoid the "decorative dimpling", you only see that in renfaire pieces, there is no time when that was period.
