My youngest son got his first knife last week in the exhange here. When I explained the circumstances, the Seller mentioned that his 7 year old daughter was also his "knife buddy". Thought that was awesome. He threw this lanyard bead in. You would think the little guy won the lottery. :)

He went garage saleing with his Mom this morning. When I walked in from work he showed me a knife that he found today.

Second in his collection. He tried to buy it but the grandfatherly gentleman insisted that he wanted donate it to the cause.

This support and encouragement of young kids, really goes a long way to restore some faith in humanity. Atleast the knife loving sector. :)

After a quick search, I found that Fes Roostfrei was a German knife company, active in the 70's.

It's huge, heavy and pretty damn cool for a six year olds second knife. I find it neat that he digs the vinage look and aspect.

Let's hear stories about your little ones intro to knives. Recently or back when. Curious if they careied it into adulthood. Pics of their gear would be great.

That’s awesome man! I was hoping someone would make a thread like this. My soon to be 12 year old daughter caught the bug a few years ago and has a pretty impressive collection of her own. We went on vacation last year in Gatlinburg and made a stop at SMKW and walked around and looked at knives together for about 4 hours! It’s really cool when the kiddos show interest in one of your hobby’s. I took a few pics of her stuff and made her sit out a few of her favorites. She’s been hitting me up for a reate exo gravity knife for about a year now. I had one I recently traded and she was pretty mad about it 😂IMG_0593.jpegIMG_0594.jpegIMG_0595.jpegIMG_0597.jpeg

That's cooking with bacon man. I'd buy a few of those for myself :). You're killing it Dad!

My 4 year old daughter has already claimed a couple of my knives. She told me she would be ready next year for her first one haha. She is very determined. I think in going to get her one of the plastic delica kits.
The plastic delica kit is pretty cool. I bought a couple of them at blade show last year. I’ve also seen some wooden spyderco kits but I can’t remember where.

Mine got a plastic knife with a toy kitchen set when she was 2, and since she sees me using my knives she constantly asks to help use them. She's already claimed this one as hers (she's 3).

My wife and I started all our four kids pretty young.

The kitchen is usually where they get their first lessons, with a serrated plastic knife that is still sharp enough to cut things. We progress from there...

I think responsible parenting involves training our children to use and maintain knives, and commend all of you who are on that path as well!IMG_9780.jpeg

Absolutely!

We're keeping his in his own space, in my box. He can get it and admire, but only open/cut/close in my presence for now. Just has to ask with a please, so ofcourse we're cutting something every ten minutes lol. He'll slowly earn more freedom by requiring less reminders and direction.

I have to give a HUGE shout out to Knives Ship Free! Many years ago they offered knives to kids FOR FREE! They even engraved their names on the knives!!! My twin girls each got one of these Bucks and that got them going on the journey. Hell they are 22 now.

Dang! Little Abby had her a serious knife. :)

Are the girls still into knives at all?

My 3 year old daughter noticed me constantly carrying and using knives and frequently asks for one. So, I obliged.

Whittled it from a cedar branch.

She knows all the parts - point, edge, spine, handle, pommel- and which ones to avoid. She even knows how to properly hand it to someone else (pommel first) and not to run while carrying it.

She'll graduate to an Opinel or a stockman in a couple years. She's got a lot to learn about proper use and handling, but so far she's off to a great start.

Oh man! That's too cool. How amazing is that feeling that they will know these skills and knowledge for a lifetime? Maybe even pass it on down. Not many things in this old world have that weight.

I was just telling my wife that if I punched the big clock tomorrow, and headed to the barn for the last time. My kids would have many interests that may just have them remembering what the old man was about. :)

My little knife amigo added a first Gen Byrd. Bow he's really got the hots for a flipper. We have a few offers in over at the exchange as I type.

Indeed, she has a keen interest in other hand tools too. Maybe I can steer her into the trades.
