Little Green Squares?

Everybody gets to rate each other. Everybody has a little scale at the top right corner of their post. Click on it and it will ask whether you approve of the post or not, then you can write a message in the box. Be sure to put your name at the end of the message so I know who's bad mouthing me ya bastids ;)

It's supposed to be for recognition of help given, but on this board it's highly misused/abused.
One one end of the forums, you have people glad handing their clique buddies for ripping others, and on the other, people don't use it at all.
It's also abused by trolls for back stabbing you in anonymity, if you didn't agree with their spew.

IMO, it's a childish feature, like handing out gold stars in class.

When they first activated this feature, you had the option of disabling it(which I did), now you don't.:barf:

Edited to add; Here's a link to a thread in service, and support that explains the whole thing.

Thanks guys for the imput on the squares, I had no idea what they were for or if they had any meaning. After reading this I checked it out and found that I had 4 posts and 2 of those were negative. I wish they would show who makes the comments so if a person makes unnecessary negative comments, I can ignore them if they ask for any help that I would otherwise be very willing to share. I don't mind constructive criticism, matter of fact I welcome it, it helps a person to improve and learn quicker, but negative comments with no meaning but NASTY irritate me and I would like to know who the comment was made from for future reference.

Yeah, its got some bad points to it, but if you take it for what its worth and nothing more, its fun. Kind of an easy way to get a quick jab in at somebody and yank their chain without hijacking a thread. I don't give out negatives, if I didn't like what you wrote I'd either post a response or ignore you.

That's what I was referring to above. It's not meant to punish people just because you don't like them, or disagree with what they say. It's for rewarding good actions, and giving negative points is for really bad, or trollish behavior on the forums.
It's also not supposed to be used in anonimity, but all the choads that give the negative points are rather cowardly, and never sign their name.

Like I said above, childish.:rolleyes::barf:

I guess what i don't understand is if you are going to have a "rating" system, then why can't everybody view the "feedback" comments as opposed to 10+ or 50+? If it was set up more like eBay where people could view your rating and see who left the feedback, it would be a much better tool.

When you give people the opportunity to give thier opinion and not be identified (held responsible) for it, the door is open for a bunch of BS.

I got a negative the other day because I posted a finished knife in the Shop Talk forum and the person said I should post things like that in the Gallery. What ever. And guess what, they did not sign their comment, so who knows who it came from. Imagine that.

I am 100% in agreement with Bill on the point of if you like it cool, if you don't, then tell me what you don't like so I can improve my work in the future. Isn't that why we are here, to learn from each other? If I can't Handle hearing what you have to say, then I am in the wrong business, or I need to go away for a while and grow up.

But, like Mike said, all the choads and trolls like to say what they want and not be held accountable. Unfortunately that also seems to be the way society is leaning. Hhhmmmm, who would have thought that you might have to own up for your actions in life. Definitely not the people who like to sue McDonalds for serving hot coffey because they did not give the customer "proper" notice that it would burn them if they dumped it in their crotch. Go figure.

Anyway, enough of my rant. I believe in your right to have the freedom of speech, and to live the way you want, but it annoys the sh$t out of me when people don't feel that they need to be held responsible for their own actions, words, or the effect that they have on others.

Go to your user control panel. The most recent rep points should show up. Red ones are negative. Blue/gray ones are negatives that came from people who haven't earned any reputation of their own and don't detract from your total. Green ones are positive.

It really isn't worth much more than a quick way to thank someone for help, or do some ball busting without taking the thread OT. Not really something to be taken seriously. As far as anonymous negatives, if they won't even sign it you know how much it really meant to them and what their opinion is worth. I'm not sure that everyone knows that they don't automatically show who its from either.

I have to admit, I never looked at my rep points until just now. Probably hard to hurt someone's feelings if they don't even know you're dissing em... :D

As far as I'm concerned, the feature is really pretty pointless unless the person submitting is identified. My own experience is the same as you guys' - the nice comments were signed and the negatives were not. Buncha pussies out there! Good grief.

Well, I'll try to remember to leave rep points when someone does something I particularly admire. That strikes me as the most likely use for it. Matt had a good point about taking OT comments off line too.

Mike I really hope the whole place isn't going down in a handbasket! I don't think it is. There are still the regular grownups around here who enjoy exchanging knife lore, and there always will be. The fact it's popular is going to attract a certain number of undesireables; this is Earth, afterall. ;) Ignore em and they'll go away, that's my practice.

By the way - Amen!

This place is fast turning bad.:barf:

I agree, Mike. Notice I don't post alot anymore. You guys are my friends, but danged if there's not much control here, and its making it tiresome for the responsible adults, and the reputable folks. Have we been too kind? Have we been too easy to let go with our advice and help? Has the friendly banter attracted too many people looking for a place to roost for the winter?

I wonder.

I guess the word I focus upon here is "tool." I wonder... tool for what? Is this a friendly forum? I always featured BF ShopTalk as a place to exchange ideas and have some friendly conversation between adults with a common interest, not a popularity contest. What does the rating system serve to do? Why do developers persist in reinventing the wheel? I come here to stay in touch with my friends, not open up the opportunity for some pissant to ruin my rep as a knifemaker.

My main thought is that I think I'm a good guy, with a good friendly attitude, but even if someone was a total arse with no personality at all, that makes no difference on his potential to be a successful and very helpful addition to our forum. The rating system separates people.

I really could care less about this green square thing, the only thing I would like to know is if someone has a problem with me or my comments on the forums, then I would like to know who that person is, so I can tell them to kiss off, if they ask me for help in the future. I know a lot of people don't like critizism, constructive or not, if you can't agree with what they think or say then they don't want to hear it.
These types of people will never amount to much, when you have an atmosphere like the knife forums you have the opportunity to expand your knowledge and abilities to lengths and limits never before available, but you must be willing to listen to constructive critizism. There's no need for hateful and unconstructive replies, these just show ones ignorance, so you ignorant bastids please sign your comments so I'll know who to ignore. Thank you. ;)

I went to my UserCP when I got on the computer awhile ago, I was curious how many more negative hits I had incurred since the two last night.
What I found was a whole column of positive points given by people who care.

There really are far more good folks on these forums, than bad.
This was a nice wake up call, and lesson, that I should have more faith in people.

Edited to add; Thanks to those involved. You know who you are.:D

I just recently learned about the rep point system. It's not fair if you voice an opinion that someone diagrees with and they can slap you with a neg. point. Everyone one has a right to give an opinion as long as they aren't nasty about it. I've found that shoptalk is the most friendly part of BF. Not the the rest of BF isn't, this place just has a little better atmosphere. :)
