What often happens is a spot of epoxy is on a blade and you try to sand it off. When the epoxy is gone the spot is shinier and has less grind lines that the steel around it because the steel under the spot was sanded less. The opposite happens if you try to buff it off. The steel around it gets the grind lines buffed away as the epoxy wears off, leaving a circle of shiny metal around the spot.
To make a summation for people looking for information in this thread:
The solvent for uncured epoxy is alcohol. Denatured is best, but isopropanol will work.
The solvent for cured epoxy is acetone.
To clean up the front of the scales, or to remove excess solder on guards and bolsters, use a chisel made from brass. Take a piece of 1/4" square brass ( round will work, too) and grind the end at 45°. It will cut the epoxy off but won't harm the hardened steel blade. Sharpen the end as needed to keep the edge keen.
