Back home from Iraq for a little break and my R&R is quickly coming to an end but we're trying to make the most of it. My wife had to go back to work this week, so the kids and I planned a little hike. My reason was to get their hiking BoB's reinventoried and ready for the summer trips with the wife while I'm sweating away in Iraq.

The hike was only about 5 miles, but it was a good trail with a little climbing, plenty of creek crossings and logs to climb over or under. We did a little orienteering with compass, terrain association, water purification, improvised shelter building (actually an excuse to try out my Pasayten:D ), improvised fishing, practiced "lost" procedures and ended it up with a little "survival swimming" and a survival picinic

I have a few small, older Camelback-type packs that I use for the kids on day hikes. They're a little on the robut side, but I enjoyed building them and using them with the kids (not to mention the comfort-factor knowing your kids have their essentials and are trained on what to do if lost).

Things have changed a litte since these pics, but this is pretty much right on for what they have:

A little less than 5 and a half pounds without water...not too bad, but I think it's a little lighter since I made some adjustments.

Just did a patina on the little Moras.

Awesome! I love seeing the threads where kids are getting some good ol' outdoor and Dad time. Looks like you folks had a great time, and the area looks very nice. Thanks for sharing, and, Thank You for your service!

Nice pics. I love spending outdoors time with my kids, definitely adds to the experience.

That is Colorado Bend State Park Right???

Been there several times---(I live in Round Rock)

Man, thats awesome. What a set of pics.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, SIR.

You're kids are beauties. I've got two daughters. I'm terrified of mine getting to your daughters age. Jeez. Come home soon so you can beat back the boys.

Yeah, she'll be 13 in June...all those adolescent, girly, emotional-hormonal situations make Iraq look pretty peaceful:D She's a good kid with a smart head on her shoulders (definately takes after her mother;)

Great pics! I´m looking forward to taking my 8 year old and her cousin camping in July. There is a national park nearby (Brasilia) I´ll post some pics after. Now to set up their packs! :) Take care back in the zone! Tim

13. How terrifying. Your calm demeanor, and confidence are a big help to me! I'm kinda dreading the growing out of childhood part!

Great thread! Looks like a fun day out in the woods with your kids, and some great gear they carry too. Nice to see the Pasayten performing. I got one in a trade and really like it, but haven't used it much yet.

I do this sort of thing almost every weekend with my two little boys, give my wife a break. I love the packs, I dont have them carrying anything other than a simple camelbak. I will look into seeing if I can get them some used camelbak packs so they can start hauling their own.

And thank you for your service in Iraq! I was in an Army Reserves up until from 1991-2001, right before the deployments started. I want to go back in but my wife will kill me before the enemy does...and I'm much more fearful of her than any insurgent! I love the new uniforms, though.

Great pics! Makes me anxious for the snow here to melt...

I like the kydex for the moras, with the firesteel sheath! Did you make that or have it done?

I also add my thanks for your service in Iraq! You guys are doing a great job!!!

Cheers

Yep, it's only about an hour from Killeen...great for long weekends or day hikes. We found it last time we were stationed here and really like it...especially during the week or off season times when we can have the whole place to oursleves:D

I had it done from Dave (Frugal Squirrel / Sheathmechanic); not sure if he's still making sheaths, but feel free to borrow the pic for your own experimentation or for somebody else to use as a reference.

What kind of sunfish is that? It has a huge mouth.

It's some sort of small perch/bluegill or green-sunfish variety. There were several about this size...I think they're use to hikers feeding them...my son had no trouble using a fly to catch a couple. They weren't very big, I told my son he'd have to catch a half dozen for my breakfast alone:)

What'd you guys do with the fish?

Just catch and release...we weren't really planning on fishing, my son just wanted to try out a little angling with his mini fishing kit.

Thank you for your service.

I plan on a 3 day camping and canoe trip this weekend just me and my 9 year old son. I hope we can find some of that wild cucumbers, wild black olives, and wild banana peppers (?) like on that great looking sandwich. I must remember to bring a camera.

They are great pics bro, looks like you had a great time !
I have always liked those Pasayten knives and I have heard they are pretty light to carry as well , I guess they would also work well for food prep.
How old is your son he looks about my sons age maybe a little younger !
Your kids kits look real good as well by the way !!!
