This is unscripted, and totally live, zero editing.

It's the first thing I have ever done like it, and was a bit concerned that it would suck.

We are working on how the format appears....so we know that it is not optimal for viewing pleasure....

Please feel free to comment....we are trying to make something that has value for everyone.

Best Regards,

Interesting, I liked it! It was a bit hard to hear, a boom mic would have improved the sound.

All KnifeTV videos can be found at www.knifetv.com

The first videos were shot with a crappy camera on the fly back in 2005. The FERRUM FORGE video is shot vertical and was a LIVE Periscope* broadcast. (Our Periscope is @KnifeTV ) We are looking to aggregate great traditional content in addition to doing cool LIVE stuff on the new Periscope app.

*Please keep in mind Periscope only supports an iPhone at this time and for now, the cool factor there is seeing it happen LIVE. Production values should be judged accordingly. If you follow our Twitter @KnifeTVLive you will be instantly notified when we go LIVE so you can tune in and share the experience.

I liked the content but, the vertical format kills it. Human interest stuff needs to show people in their surroundings so, back off and frame the subject looser. Also, might want to consider shooting some B-roll on the workbenches and machines that you can insert in editing so viewers get a better idea what is being talked about. I would really like to see you guys do more of these.

I think you might have a more convincing presence if you stood on a phone book- or a soap box, perhaps.
That's why the best interviewers sit down.
You don't have to thank me, I'm happy to help :)

Awesome work, STeven. It has legs.
Have your camera man move slower from scene to scene. And like mentioned above - lose the vertical format. It hurts.

Can't view from work and keep forgetting once I get home - dammit - will check it out soon.

I would have enjoyed some intro music. Maybe a banjo or something to get things rolling. Also, seeing the process at work, or video clips of the knife making process too. Not only talked about.. Good job Steven!

Bro, Adam is the Producer type guy......I'm the content type guy.

I tell him all the time he is frikkin' retarded, but he doesn't listen because he's frikkin' retarded.

We'll get it figured out.....I've never been afraid to look like a moron in front of a camera, because I'm a moron...pretty much like you....least we can both laugh about it!

Joe... First of all... Thanks for the honest feedback. I think I did a bad job in positioning what our ambitions are and what we are trying to do at this stage.

First.. the stuff we shot back in 2005 has terrible production values and it was just shot on a whim with no crew and crappy pre-digital equipment. The Ferrum Forge shoot on YouTube was an archive of a Periscope video. Shot on an iPhone and obviously raw. I am not going to argue the future of Persicope, Meerkat or any other new live streaming platform. I can say it is a new thing and admit that due to the current limitations, the video quality is rough and there are no opportunities for multiple camera angles, b-roll or music beds, etc. I love this format and we are early adopters and the primary value here is that it is LIVE. I should have more prominiently indicated IT WAS A PERISCOPE LIVE VIDEO we were archiving on YouTube. We are going to keep creating in this medium and constantly looking for ways to improve. The hope is the majority of viewers will actually watch these broadcasts live. Judging them post-live on YouTube based on their production value is a waste of time as we admit freely... the production value is rough and mandated by what the medium supports at this time. It will improve and so will we. (Gonna do our best to be the best in this brave new world!)

I have deep experience in pre-produced video and this is not what we were trying to do. I love your content btw! We need great pre-produced traditional video content to balance out our LIVE broadcasts. Doing the LIVE thing is where my focus is. It's new, evolving fast and opens the doors to many cool possibilities.

No excuses here... Just want to clarify things.

Joe... No ability to fade in or out right now in Persicope. IT IS A CELL PHONE. :) The issue with vertical versus horizontal is a big global arguement right now.

I gave the LIVE Periscope event priority and not the YouTube archive.

Let me explain this. On Periscope, viewer comments resolve in bubbles from the bottom of the screen in the vertical ratio only. The format is primarily a vertical one. This makes for the crappy letterbox look in post placement on YouTube. I THINK WE ARE GOING TO BLAZE A NEW TRAIL ON PERISCOPE AND SHOOT FUTURE BROADCASTS HORIZONTAL. THEY WILL THEN LOOK 16X9 ON YOUTUBE AND FILL THE FRAME. I believe their engineers will eventually modify their programming so comments switch in horizontal mode accordingly.

Again... I did a bad job of positioning the Ferrum piece as simply an archive of a LIVE Periscope. I think we do need a partner to provide great pre-produced content to current industry standards to round things out. My desire is to remain focused on the LIVE opportunities and build our audience in real time.

These are my thoughts so, no offense meant and you're free to disagree. Periscope and other live broadcast platforms are not a good fit for your content. Most do not have the time to tune in on someone else's schedule for these type of broadcasts. You will get far more views of the program after the live broadcast than you will ever achieve during. The only really useful point I see to the periscope-type platform is instructional content, where questions and clarification can be immediate and to the point.

It's your gig and you can run it the way you want but, if you want to gain a real following, being good is more important than being an early adopter.

Agreed:

WE ARE GOING TO GO TO HORIZONTAL AND MAY EVEN DO SIMULTANEOUS 16x9 SHOOTING TO SUPPLEMENT THE LIVE FORMAT SO WE ARE BETTER ON YOUTUBE.

Thx,

Bob,

I always appreciate honest feedback and as stated, I am a big proponent of the newly evolving LIVE streaming platforms. I believe it really is the start of the disruption of traditional broadcast carriers. I think LIVE is a great fit and being there in real time is super compelling as long as the content is live-worthy. What constitutes live-worthy will be an interesting evolution. It is a new thing and we will see. To give some color, I created an enterprise software company called Akonix back in 2000 that licensed the first social network platform to business. Big company CEO's at major sports and corporate Fortune 500 brands told us with total certainty that social media would never be important to business. In 2007 I spoke at a conference of marketing VPs, also from major companies, and told them... "You will all have social media departments and Managers of Social Media by 2015." The audience laughed at me. (I wish I had video of that.) There is not a company on the planet with over $10M in annual revenues that does not have a Social Media executive now.

I believe in this medium and am jaded by my own perspective. (trying to be intellectually honest here) I love collecting knives and the world of knives and want to do something great here for all of us. We will work to find a balance of great traditional and LIVE content. I am indeed an early adopter and will try my best to make sure GOOD factor is always present on the new frontier. Your advice is on the mark and appreciated.

Best,

Adam
