Living with knife-ignorant people

I work with many mechanics and people who have told me they are "mechanically minded" .

😂 as in : " . . . and that is why I am so mechanically minded" 🤣
Not a one can sharpen even a screw driver or a cold chisel let alone a knife .

Hell I'm the one who airs up the tires on the hand truck when the rims are bumping against the floor . . .😞

As far as what to do for the people in your kitchen ?
Get 'em a chef ? ? ?

I have 2 sets of sockets in my tool box, MINE and ones I loan out. For the same reason. Some folks can break an anvil!!
With my bunch you would never see that socket (s) again or not until you stumbled across it one day.
I'm the one that gets greeted with the Stare Of Disbelief when they ask to borrow a tool and I say nope .

old story :
Some young guy showed up late to work at a machine shop and said to another guy that he had forgot his micrometer . He asked if he thought that "old guy" in the back would lend him one ; he has a whole bunch of 'em . . .
Other guy says : You would have better luck asking to borrow his wife . 😮
😂

I was born at night, but not last night. I live in a household where people have "jobs", and won't do a fucking thing if it isn't in their "job" description - I'm not taking on any new "jobs", I'll invisibly help out while they're asleep but I'm not committing, I'm just bitching about people who can't see the work in front of them and just fucking do it because it isn't within their assumed job position. Christ Almighty, this is a household of supposedly loving family, not a job shop.

Maybe I'm an asshole. Maybe I've been burned before.

Sounds like spring can't come soon enough... Relax, there are so many better things to worry about. ( MIT's end of civilization prediction, Climate Change, the US political system...)

Good idea. I'm not normally grumpy, but I had just spent considerable time sharpening the couple of "decent" kitchen knives, only to walk into the kitchen a few hours later to see my niece using one of them to chop vegetables loudly on a playing-card-thin plastic sheet laying on the marble counter.

I'm all better now.

For general-access home kitchen knives my family has a bunch of serrated steak knives for "layperson utility" but a handful of "good paring knives" and chef's knives/santoku knives that are designated "sharps" used for dinner prep and cooking exclusively, and I keep them maintained for everyone with a simple medium/fine stone with just a quick scrub any time they need it when I do dishes. Then there's the knives that only I'm allowed to touch lol
