Nothing cool like chopping up a car to report, but today I used my first piece of SR101 to cut up a small mountain of cardboard boxes that had been piling up in the garage since we moved into the new house and I was throughly impressed with how well it held an edge. I had it sharpened to a toothy edge that wasn't quite hair popping sharp but would shave with a little pressure, and after a good hour of slicing cardboard it would still shave with the help of a little pressure. I couldn't belive it. It dulled a tiny bit but not enought that I thought it needed to be resharpened before oiled it and put it away. Pretty impressive to say the least. For 95% of what I use a knife for, I think that I actually like this SR101 better than INFI.

I'd think most ELU's would be perfectly happy with their usage if sr101 were the only blade steel in existence...

It's not as rust prone as some think, especially when it gets USED often and maintained properly like what you demonstrate.

It's a true joy to sharpen also, if you like that kind of thing!

I love sr101!! A lot... the ease of sharpening an option of shiny satin finish make INFI nice.. but if sr101 was offered in nice thick cuts like INFI, I'd have even more. I seriously think sr101 is way better than most people realize because it's in the shadow of infi.. but that stuff is LEGIT

Sr-101 is great! I still want everything in INFI instead though. ;)

Of my 10 kin, I have 9 in SR-101 and 1 in INFI.

3 of the 5 I have on order are also SR-101.

Why buy non-INFI blades from Busse? You get 90% of the performance and 100% of the warranty at anywhere from 50% to 70% of the price! I think it's fantastic.

That said, as my collection matures, I'll probably move closer to a 50/50 mix, but the deluge of Battle Grade offerings allows me to try out a bunch more designs than I would otherwise.

Probably the most brilliant thing about OP2W imo is SR-101 being offered in Busse knives, when previously it was the domain of SYKCO and Swamp Rat.

I buy INFI because I want 100% performance. It may not be all that likely that I would ever NEED to have INFI instead of SR-101, but it's worth the extra cost to me just in case. The top 10% of performance in everything, knives or otherwise, is always expensive. I personally would rather compromise elsewhere. That being said I do have a few Busse's in SR-101 and I have a couple more on order because they don't come in INFI.

I am a believer in SR-101 also, Have a few BG AK's and really enjoy them! Bought the AK's in SR 101 as I could not justify the price for a sword in INFI (Will get very little Use) as I prepare for the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse which everyone knows is coming- Everything else I have is INFI!!!- Cheers

After having used SR101, I don't think the "90% of the performance at 50-70% of the price" saying really applies. It held and edge better than my infi stuff has, doing the same job. So for regular knife use I'd actually say that you get more performance for less money.

Looks like you know what kind of steel you prefer for future Purchases-Congrats and Cheers

As TommyGun56 said it's great that you found your steel of choice. That being said, the saying absolutely does apply, and I believe it was Jerry that said it. INFI is great at a lot of different things, but there are lots of other steels that do great at a some things. If edge retention is what you judge performance by than that's certainly fine, everyone has their own uses for their knives.

Good points on both sides.

I bought a few things in INFI because I wanted some of the "best" too even though I don't feel I will ever really need the extra toughness or corrosion resistance, which I think are generally what people point to as the extra 10%.

For me performance is really all about geometry for wood chopping anyway and I'm a little less scared of modifying the less expensive blades :)

After the chopping I did yesterday, the DT went on another slim fast diet and hit the belts on my 1x30" to lose some more weight. Sharpened up like a dream and accidentally sliced a chunk out of my thumb lol, (I'm ok!) :D

We're having steak tonight, so I plan to slice it up with the DT and give it some patina. It still has some deeper grind lines since I'm not sure if it's done dieting yet. From the testing I did in my garage though, I think it's about ready to shred.

I am curious to see the difference between the two steels after batoning some dry wood as that is really the toughest job I expect the edge of my knives to do.

I was always hesitant to try sr101 because it doesn't have the corrosion resistance of infi but my 1311 mad me a believer in it

I inadvertently batoned my 1311 into a nail a while back. The damage was minor, all I could see was a flat on the edge.
