l'm a new believer in SR101

After having used SR101, I don't think the "90% of the performance at 50-70% of the price" saying really applies. It held and edge better than my infi stuff has, doing the same job. So for regular knife use I'd actually say that you get more performance for less money.

I used to think the same way and still kind of do..here are my reasons for and against buying INFI;

PROS
-The corrosion resistance is really nice for me as i hate patinas (they look cool but i think they are just dirty...lol) and since i am buying these knives mostly for TEOTWAWKI / ZA, there is likely going to be limited supplies to look after and maintain your blades, so, INFI.

-Ease of sharpening in field / with limited supplies

-Way better designs are released in INFI

-Only (some) INFI knives (AFAIK) have the Nuclear Meltdown treatment, which i absolutely love and wish every knife had

-SR-101 knives aren't offered with G10 handles (excluding OP2W knives), which are a must have for me

-If a knife is released in INFI and SR-101, the INFI versions usually has more features that make the knife. Think TGLB, the BG doesn't have the LB treatment, the hollow grind or Nuclear Meltdown treatment.

-If i wanted a high carbon steel knife, there are soo many more options elsewhere, for cheaper

-INFI is bomb proof

-Go big or go home

CONS
- Doesn't hold an edge for as long compared to SR-101

- Way more expensive than SR-101

The way i see it now, INFI is worth the price tag and SR-101's only PROS are that it holds an edge longer (which is a negative because it's harder / takes to sharpen with limited supplies in TEOTWAWKI / ZA scenarios - what i am buying the knife for) and it's cheaper (INFI's price tag is justifiable with all of it's PROS).

YMMV!

SR-101 is good stuff, it's not INFI, but it's as close as you can get for the price. ;)

Checked and it hasn't been sharpened out yet, here's a pic of what's left:

I am curious to see the difference between the two steels after batoning some dry wood as that is really the toughest job I expect the edge of my knives to do.

IMHO, no one can tell the difference in this particular application. Batoning is not really the most demanding use.

The huge advantage that I see of SR101 is that it's inexpensive enough that you'll be less likely to shy away from tasks due to possible damage. This is when people will begin to realize what these steels are truly capable of. If you break an SR101 knife, at most you'll spend a couple hundred bucks for a replacement.

The point where I became a Swamp Rat and Busse fanatic was shortly after I borrowed River-8's howling rat and he said "if you break it, you owe me postage." (referring to the warranty)

Kinda what I was thinking. After the first couple whacks, the sides of the blade do all of the work.

^^^ Agreed.

It will cost you zero, because you can't break it. There is nothing in the normal or even exteme use of these blades that could break one. AFAIK, the only broken blades were shot.

Well, there was that one Swamp Rat knife that some drunk in Europe beat on for 8 hours with a pipe wrench. That hardly counts.

I don't think that people are getting what Jerry is telling them ... these knives are born to be beaten, you can't abuse them, only use them.

Bussekin blade are laughing at people who baby them out of concern.

So THATS what that sound is......

^^^ This. Plus, even if you broke it, it still wouldn't cost you 'hundreds of bucks,' because the warranty would give you a shop credit and set you up with another knife.
