This was for the Video Request thread that Tony started but I figured I would post it here as well.

Thanks for the video, it gives me some good insights to the GG steel I just got. I like that it is moth sparker and tinder, that is something that cannot be done with the LMF. However they both wok better when you can brace the end on the surface where your tinder is such as a piece of wood or bark. Then everything is much more stable and scatters less tinder.

I know but I was trying to do everything indoors and that little metal dish was the only safe thing to throw the sparks in that was close and handy.
I was also watching everything upside down because of the way the camera was set up.

Great comparison video, Md. I've had my Going Gear steel for awhile now, so I've had some time to practice. It takes awhile to get it just right after using other types for so long, but I wouldn't go back, now: love the Going Gear firesteels.

Ha, I understand what that's like lol.

I do really like how the mischmetal firesteels are both the sparks and the tinder if needs be. I've seen that before but that is the best demo of that I have seen so far and I will have to play with that some myself now. That is a definite plus in a damp environment like the one I live in and that could well save my life. Even here where I have basically unlimited access to fatwood.

I've been playing with the LMF longer but both types over the last couple of days. They have different sparking characteristics but both work fine for igniting tinder.

So far in my own personal studies the one advantage I see with the LMF firesteels is in being able to use a natural striker with short strokes...on a short fire steel. I personally do not like the serrated striker that comes with the LMF firesteel at all, it bends too easily and unless held just right really doesn't allow for hard enough pressure to get the good sparks. That striker is probably one of the reasons people think they won't do as hot of sparks as they can produce with another striker and more pressure.

As I said before my studies of the mischmetal firesteels still continue and will for some time to come. But so far I'm sticking to my original position I came to from seeing the Going Gear firesteels demonstrated by Tony, that has been reinforced by my own experiences over the last couple of days. If you have the ability to do so just carry one of each, they aren't very big or very heavy and both have their own advantages. And I definitely prefer the 3/8 diameter firesteels in both.

Man, I'm just waiting for the accusations of giving you guys kickbacks with all the threads about my firesteels lately (the checks are in the mail).

I've got some pretty neat (to me, anyway) fire starting stuff in the works. I'll share more when I can.

Not to put too fine a point on it, Storl, but last month's check was late. Please try to do better in the future.

Seriously, if you have new fire starting stuff in the works, I can hardly wait. You're becoming the go-to guy for fire starting gear.

I know I am thinking about calling you for some advertising advice! :)

Great videos.

Great video buddy! At least you didn't put a hole through your gortex coat. I've done that a few times now.

I have yet to play with the misch metal fire steels, but I do really like the magnesium blocks. Especially with the file on a multi-tool to make fine shavings quickly, they are as easy to strike as the LMF style starters, and burn hot enough to light a lot of stuff that's really tough to light with just a firesteel. In fact, I think I ought to go pick up a couple more of those to keep in different bags.

Thanks, thats exactly what I needed

No problem bro, I had to be shown too :)

I think the ferro rods on Doan mag blocks are pretty much identical to the LMF firesteels...only smaller and partially hidden in the groove on the block. The work fine used as "firesteels" in most cases and have the magnesium to back them up.

Really? The ferro rods on the mag blocks are the same as the LMF firesteels?

So this one at Walmart is what you're talking about?

If that's correct it wouldn't make sense to by a LMF firesteel for $10-$15 when you can get the same thing "with magnesium" for $5.
