LMF vs GOINGEAR Firesteels- Video Comparison

Supposedly they're not made as well and the ferro rod has been known to fall off.

There was a problem a few years back with the adhesive holding the rod in on the Colghan's model. That has been resolved and shouldn't be an issue.

Really? The ferro rods on the mag blocks are the same as the LMF firesteels?

So this one at Walmart is what you're talking about?

If that's correct it wouldn't make sense to by a LMF firesteel for $10-$15 when you can get the same thing "with magnesium" for $5.

The ferro rods on the Doan fire starters I have are pretty much identical to the LMF...same sparking characteristics anyway.

No, not at Wal-Mart I haven't bought one of those in years...had the ferro rod fall off of one and have made sure I bought Doans since then. They are the issue ones I buy at our local army surplus shop. I've never had one of their ferro rods fall off after dozens of them bought and used, abused,...and passed on to friends.

Well you see, the mag block is great but even with its size it is still, like most stuff issued to pilots for survival, meant for short term use. The ferro rod is only 3/16 inch diameter and half that is recessed into the mag block so you are left with only 3/32 of an inch of ferro rod exposed for striking.

That being said, when I step off into the woods I usually have a fixed blade with a firesteel attached, a folding knife and a mag block in my right front pocket, and a bic in my shirt pocket. Sometimes whats where changes but they are still there somewhere.
