LN2 Dewar

Having purchased an HT Oven, I'm now in the market for an LN2 dewar but have no clue as where to start. I'd like to keep the cost reasonable but also do understand this to be an investment.

Other than a large "mouth," what should I look for in a dewar? What size would you recommend? Are there any good sources out there from whom to purchase?

Thanks guys, I've been reading as much as possible but as always, too much information and misinformation seem to overdose the senses.

Regards,
Mike

i had a std. mouth (2 inch ) 10l first but since i do alot of kitchen knives when that one lost vac. i upgraded to 20l wide mouth (3.75 inch) the bigger the opening that faster the LN evaporates so make your tradoff count. i get aobut 45 days on the 20l between fillings and thts about 3 batch of blades HT in my shop. got aobut the same amount of days with th 10l since it had the smaler neck and it cost half the$ to fill. pick wisely

Thank you for responding Butch. Hopefully I find one soon, I'm having a to borrow an LN Flask for now which is ok for the razors I'm doing but a dewar would be best.

I bought mine at a farm auction for a very good price.

I even got a bonus! ;) It had about $100,000 worth of grade A bull seed left in it. Of course that value was before the liquid nitrogen evaporated, allowing the seed to spoil. :barf: LOL

I found a place with decent prices on a 10L with a 2.5" mouth but the wait time is 4-6 weeks. Fortunately, I found a knife nut who has a welding shop and a huge LN tank who was willing to trade a knife for a flask rental. :)

** Crazy thing about that "free filling." There were a few on ebay that were shown with the aftermath expressed in broken vials and black putrid goo. Needless to say, I had to remove them as an option.

I swear I heard somewhere that if you edge quench 1095 in spoiled bull seed you get the best hamon ever! Maybe it is just residue.

Seriously my kid brother is a Dermatologist and he has a huge dewar the he said I can use as needed, so maybe search used medical supply. Also, you might find one at a School Board auction.

Good luck with your search.

Thanks for the tip. I've been looking everywhere for a dewar but more likely than not, a new one will have to do as most for sale look pretty worn and tattered. Typically a broken down tool is just a challenge and not a deterrent but reconditioning one seems quite complex for something so simple.
