Hi,

Every so often at work or were ever someone will ask "can I use your knife" as they are looking at my leatherman wave on my belt.
Just one of them thing were I have trouble saying "no" but at the same time that is just what I would like to say.
I was thinking of having a second knife in my pocket just to use as a loaner.
Anyone else carry a second blade just to use as a loaner?

Thanks,
JP

I don't carry a loaner, though that is a good idea. However, I am very selective about who I let use my knives. If you are uncomfortable about others using your knives, and uncomfortable about saing NO, you can always say something like, " Sorry, I'm kinda fussy about loaning out my knives. I'd be happy to cut something for you though".

I carry a V-nox Recruit at work and loan it out if needed....but there ain't nobody but me touching my Sebbi!

Generally I will loan out my Victorinox Recruit or my SOG Paratool. If it's a buddy or known knife knut I would lend out my main blade. A knife is a pretty simple tool but it is still amazing to see what some people attempt to do with it.

Just thought of a funny story. Well it seems funny now.
A few years ago i had a gerber multi tool. The bosses son was helping that day. I was inside a house working and he was outside unpacking some boxs. He came inside and asked to use my knife. No problem, I gave it to him. He came back with it later, handed it to me all folded up. A few minuts later I took out the gerber to use the blade and the dam blade was broken off. Only about 1/2 inch of the blade left.
Dam kid did not even tell me about it. I asked him what the hell happened with my knife.
He broke it trying to cut a steal band that the boxs have around them.
The boss or the kid did not think they needed to buy me a new gerber.
So the hell with the boss or his kid when they ask for anything.

Thinking about it the same boss lost my buck pocket knife many years ago, ten or so years ago. Father, like son.

I should have known better.

I always have a second knife to lend to people. Actually I usually have three knives and I will lend out my pocket knife.

I always keep a well sharpened Chinese stainless handled gentlemans folder in the watch pocket of my jeans. If someone asks to borrow my knife,I give them that one and tell them to keep it.Bought a case of them on ebay for less than a buck each so I'm never short of a giveaway knife and nobody but me uses "my" knife. :D

it depends on who asks and what they want to use it for....i work 95 percent of the time in the hospital and there are very few folks who really need to handle one of my knives.....thats why i carry a leatherman micra and lend it out all of the time...they cant hurt themselves or anyone else with one of those and if they screw it up its no big deal.....feverdoc

I always have my loaner/abuser knife on me at work. I call it my "throw down piece" I Work in a maintainence shop in a hospital so I always have a co-worker asking me if they can use my knife. I sure don't hand them the Dalton Scalper that I carry every day. I hand them my mini CQC7b. I'm not afraid that they are going to trash it cause I know it can take it if someone decides to bring the pain and cut a big staple or something. there are a couple of people that won't lend any sharp instrument to but for the most part the guys in the shop use common sense. A few even bought their own knives after they saw how useful it is to have one

............think alike:D I am like Paul. I carry a small Spydie in my left front pocket and if get asked for a knife this is the one. Ain't nobody putting their grubby paws on my Sebbie.......but me!:D

...Being that I'm kind of a 'knife guy', I usually have a few on me...

But, I've found that most people that need a knife, and don't have one, are pretty much clueless.

So, I never 'surrender' a knife when asked if I have one, and if the person won't let me step up to 'do the job', I tell them they're on their own and walk away...

(I've been with this company for 12 years, 'outstanding performer' acknowledgement each year, above average reviews, but still happy to be wallowing in the trenches. In other words, I may 'piss someone off' with my attitude, but they really can't do 'dick all' about it. ...You other SAIC guys know what I mean...lol) ;)

That being said, I don't ever 'loan' knives...ever. (emphasis on '.')

My rational? I like my knives. I take care of them, and they work for me. If a non-knife guy needs a hammer or screwdriver, and uses your knife...you're screwed, and he's still clueless!

"Just say NO!"

I just have a hard time lending my knives or fountain pens out. It just doesn't work. So I try to have an Uncle Henry in my pocket and a ball point.

I like your way of thinking :)

Well I remember lending, and then giving my Gerber Covert to a friend of mine. The first thing he did with it was to try to stick in into a tree by throwing it. I think that's the last knife i'll give away.

Me too. Use the flathead more than anything-quicker than digging out the Leatherman every time I have to replace or tighten a hose clamp. I have never used the larger blade...but a couple of other people have.
Mel's got the right idea, too.
Nobody else uses my CF EDC, small Sebenza, or even my 710HS beater. "No" comes very easy for me:)

All of my knives are too damn sharp to loan out. I hate to see anyone slice-off parts of his hand and/or fingers!.:).

Years ago when a friend borrowed my Al Mar Falcon and proceeded to use it for a screwdriver, I came to the conclusion that people who don't actually carry knives shouldn't be trusted with a knife I love. I do loan beaters out but non-knife people almost never even see my good knives let alone get to use them.

nah, never.. I usually give them away if I get that "lost puppy" look.. *heh-heh!*

I loan out a partially-serrated beater Benchmade if the need arises with two requests:
1) I want it back.
2) Don't cut yourself, it's very sharp.
I figure they're adults, they know what a knife is, have used one before, know they're sharp and have been cut before. Getting it back is another matter. Friends & co-workers know I carry a rotation of knives and usually ask me to handle the cutting chore. But every now & then someone has to learn the hard way and will not take no for an answer....

We were closing down the soccer fields and it was one guy's job to cut the nets off the goals (cut some zip ties). Of course he was directed to me for a cutting tool :D. I told him I would do it, but he insisted and asked to borrow a knife. I gave my usual warnings, and even added, "I mean wicked sharp, so cut away from yourself and BE CAREFUL". An hour or so passed and I had not seen the gentleman, or my knife. A fellow volunteer approached me after a while. The conversation went kinda' like this:
Me: "You seen Scott (name changed to protect the wounded)?"
Other: "Yeah, he cut himself to the bone with this knife (brings out MY knife). I gave him a towel to wrap around his finger to stop the bleeding. He said to give this to you (hands me the knife timidly)."
Me: "Where's he now? Is he ok? Is he coming back?"
Other: "Went to the hospital to get some stitches. He said you warned him......looked like it hurt. He said he thought he'd be back, and that there's still some nets on the goals. He said he'd finish them, but he's not using THAT knife."
