Well Doc called it pretty well. Even though the forecast was for 100% chance of rain, we had no rain during daylight Friday and Saturday. It did rain all night Friday and Saturday and on the way out Sunday, but we still had a great time.
The trip was to Lobster Lake just east of the Northern tip of Moosehead Lake in Maine. It's about a three hour drive from Bangor. The style of this trip was modeled after some friends of mine that used to guide traditional trips for a living. It's my first canoe trip in about 10 years. It was just me and a friend from work.
It's about a 20 minute paddle up (or down) Lobster Stream.
The obligatory picture from the back of the canoe over the guy in front.
Another from the stream
The stream meets the Lake
Once at the lake, it was about another 30 minute paddle to the campsite. Given the forecast, we had the lake nearly to ourselves.
Campsite
We took advantage of the good weather to get set up and gather as much firewood as possible. I figured out within about 10 minutes that I need to remember to bring work gloves on trips -- Duh!
The firewood never had a chance
The axe is a Snow & Neally Hudson Bay Camp Axe with a sweet convex edge by Siguy. I had used this axe and ones like it a fair amount before, but with Simon's edge on it, it was OUTSTANDING! It far outperformed anything I had used before. Even after all the use, the edge is still in near perfect shape.
The saws are Schmidt pack saws. They're simple, but very effective. The blade is just a standard 24" hardware store bow saw blade. I like how light they are and how well they pack.
Once we had our tents set up and a bunch of firewood layed in, it was on to water and food.
This is my cooking setup
We didn't carry much water in due to the weight, so we started of by boiling a couple of gallons of drinking water. After it cooled, I poured it through the H2jo coffee filter into the water container seen in the first pic. Worked like a charm.
Then came dinner. Spaghetti with meat sauce (nearly from scratch)
This was the sunset view across the lake. Hard to get a clear shot with my basic digital cam.
