I took my brother to the hobby stores today - and stopped at a local yuppee sporting goods store. No revolvers to speak of, so I drifted into the knife section. Yep - $650+ Wm Henry pocket knifes - then I caught the Buck K-Ps - at list. I already had the #408 - but it looked so out of place with such high dollar knives - and it looked better - at $160 - a fraction of some of their prices. I had to handle the 419.

The 419 had a nice heft to it - yet fit and felt fine in my hand - good balance. The opening & closing was 'new' - smoother by far than a Sure Fire $425+ Ti handled folder I was handed earlier, after the clerk assured me it was 'slick' (It wasn't... not as bad as my 560XLT Ti, however.). Still, the 110 'Collector's Tin' I opened today was far smoother on it's first operation. The 419's liner lock sounded about like my Kershaw Blurs - and didn't look much more substantial, my main negative. The side view, blade in or out, showed bright brass liner - a distinctive look, with snappy brass. Nice scales, too. The blade was as near perfect as my 408's. It snapped into lock with some authority, but I'd still prefer something more massive - a lockback, perhaps. Still, at $150, it was a bargain when compared with some of the higher priced spread. That blade in S30V is nice. It's on my list.

The 408 is mine - bought for a bit less than that store's list of $160. I have spent more on custom knives - tactical & hunter style. Neat, one-offs with canvas Micarta & black Micarta handles, techie carbon steel, great sheaths... but they literally pale in comparison to my 408 K-P - it looks that good! It fits the hand - great balance & heft - nice brass fg - scales grooved for better traction (I hate checkered grips/scales of nice hardwoods!) - great finish. Even the leather sheath, which I have heard may get replaced due to a defect, is a cut above. That S30v, with it's a bit different upswept blade tip, is scarey sharp. Really, I like it... guess it was worth the wait! Go look one over - with some big buck knives - you'll be amazed.

PS I don't hunt... so what do I do with these fixed knives? Display case!

...Yep...My 419 arrived the other day and it is one nice folder...To say that the S30V blade was scarey sharp would indeed be an understatement...There is absolutely nothing I can say that would be a negative about the 419...Very much worth the wait...

Doc D....
How would you compare it to an Alpha Folder so far as form and fit?
Thanks...
Goose.

GAK...
That pic of the Gunny is TFF :)

...Gooser the 419 is put together as securely and precisely as is the Alpha folder but the 419 looks more massive. If my kid was here I'd snag her camera and take some side by side pics...It's not that it's much bigger at all it just gives that kind of impression. It opens and closes very smoothly and locks up tight as a vault just like the Alpha. The workmanship on this thing is stunning. The blade is evenly ground and centered like you'd want it to be and the finish is perfect. The S30V blade came "hair topping" sharp right out of the box...The wood scales are finished real nice and the design of the scales is a perfect match for the lines of the Kalinga...I was amazed at this one. It feels great in the hand and has a heft that just feels right. I don't know what issues they may be having with the sheaths for these but mine is very nice. It is a nice burgundy color and the dye is perfect and shows up real nice on the natural leather. This is one you might like to have goose...

Thanks D. Good read.
Does the sheath permit horizontal carry?

...That was the first thing I looked for gooser and unfortunately it doesn't afford that option as it's now made. Maybe that's something they will add later...That would have been a nice touch and one that would have been really appreciated...:(...It really is a beautiful knife though...:)...I still can't get over how sharp this thing is...sheesh...

Darryl,,,is it sharper than your other S30V?

I think it has been discussed, but I can't remember, will it fit in an Alpha cordura?

...Larry this thing came as the sharpest Buck knife I've ever received right out of the box...Usually I have to do a bit of stropping to get them to "top off hairs" when I get 'em NIB but this one just blew me away...Maybe I got one done on a Tuesday or somethin'...LOL...I haven't tried an Alpha cordura sheath on it yet...I'll have to dig one up and try it...
p.s. The only one I ever bought that came close to being as sharp as this one is a BG42 532.

Cool Deal,,,,:thumbup:,,,, I am still waiting on one coming from Peru :D

...Well ol' "collectin' rodent"...It's a bit too long when folded to fit in the Alpha cordura sheath...It goes in okay but the flap appears a bit less than a half inch too short...:(

Thanks for checking that Darryl!! I got my order in really late and just saw his thread where he only got in 9.

Maybe one will show Monday before I head out to the deer camp on Tuesday.

but may be a good thang it isn't here. I would just have to refresh son-in-laws memory about that old Mexican philosopher Nachyo Dorito.

...LOL...I'm sure you'll like it when it does arrive Pack Rat...This is one helluva knife Buck put out...It's gonna be interesting to hear how it does on those Texas deer too...;)

The replacement sheaths are for the 408 - which is what I got. The 419's bright brass - continued visible the length of the blade opening - really sets it off. No one mentioned my comment re the liner lock - I guess it's not an 'issue'. Neat knife - but too many little hands out now for my few sheckles. I couldn't believe that place's prices. At least they are pleasant/cordial. They had a 110fg for $64, too. Heck, they had everything from the Buck catalog - some neat 119BRs, too.

They have Sure Fire CR123 Li cells for $2.25 - 12/$21.99. I've bought them before... and a NIB S&W 642 for $315 OTD earlier this year - from their 'used' case (I think they were $449 new...). A great place to see what some folks will pay for firearms and knives. I noticed everyone uses plastic there... no checks or cash in hand at the register. Different income level, I suppose.

Gotta get to my freeway exit... with my 'Need bucks for Bucks!' sign...

Darryl...
Bummer about the horizontal sheath, or lack thereof. I was hoping it would fit in the Alpha cordura as well...for the day when I may get a 419 folder. Guess that shows there is a bit of a diff between the Alpha and Kalinga folders.

Stainz...
What is the defect with the 408 sheath that you mentioned? Is it a overall design flaw or just something you noted wrong with one of 'em?

Stainz, I'm not sure I'm clear on the issue with the liner lock. I got 1 for my son and opening & closing are smooth as silk, and the lock up is vault tight.

My concern, as on most liner locks, is the thin liner steel - fear of it slipping/buckling. Someone told me that the 408 sheath's deep point pocket wasn't right for the swept back point on the tip. Mine was a bit 'tight', but I thought it was just 'new' leather. The knife is on display - the case resides in it's box, so no immediate problem here. Nothing from Buck yet...

Try putting it in both ways - I know it fits in one of the buck cordura sheaths - I am pretty sure it was the Alpha sheath.
