I live in deerfield Florida and a few miles away from me there is a small heat treating shop and I have a 52100 blades that I would like to get hardened .my question is can I take my blade to any heatreating place and get good results or is it a better idea to send it to better known places like Paul Bos or peters .I've used both in the past but I think getting it done locally would be better .

In my experience with a local HT'er, controlling warp is the issue that differentiates them from Peters.

I posted a reply yesterday...I thought.

Write down the HT parameters you desire, including the final Rc. State if you want cryo done. Take a couple blades to the HTer and ask him if he is experienced at HTing knives, and if he can provide the HT specs you wrote down. If he seems agreeable, let him do the knives. When done test the blades in cutting tests for edge life and chipping. If they are straight and properly hardened, good. If not, stick with Peter's/Paul Bos.

What Stacy says - local might be good with blades, or he might only be experienced with tool steels and there is a difference. Warping is a big concern with thin blades.

Thanks for the info I really appreciate it .I should be able to stop by this week and drop off one blank to see how it turns out.
