I’m a big believer in voting with your dollars and actions, and I like to support exceptional people and businesses. That’s what this is about.

I have the good fortune of living in Oregon. I grew up in Tualatin, OR, home of KAI/Zero Tolerance/Kershaw/Shun, CRKT, and Al Mar, and close neighbor of Benchmade and Gerber. For a few years, I had the distinct privilege of doing my in-store buying at the Northwoods Knives storefront in Hillsboro, OR, and stuck with Derrick when they moved to a new KSF storefront, until they jumped to MI. Derrick won me over with his enthusiasm the first day I set foot in his shop, and I bought exclusively from him after that. His business gave me opportunities to handle all kinds of blades, from entry level stuff to Sebenzas. I never stopped being grateful for that. With Derrick’s recent passing, and with the KSF storefront many states away, I felt a little adrift.

A couple days after news of Derrick passing hit, I met and chatted up a guest in my workplace. He made a knife reference, and it turned into one of those funny, “AAAAHHHHH!!! I MET A BROTHER IN THE WILD!” moments. He told me about a new shop in the area and invited me to check them out.

Early last week, I dropped in to check out Oregon City Knife & Tool for the first time. I was amused that they’re immediately across the street from Benchmade. The shop lobby is small, with modest cases at the moment. Initially, I was underwhelmed by the selection. Buck, CRKT, and Kershaw are fine, but they’re not going to hook me. Hogue? Cool. Still, nooootttt my particular flavor. No Benchmade (too physically close to the BM store, of course). No Spyderco.

But, then I saw a full selection of ZT, and...

Hinderer knives, right there in the case!

The manager, Stephen Tomlinson, introduced himself right away. I was *very* impressed at how genuinely enthusiastic the guy is. He was 100% interactive and having *fun* while I checked out some of the goodies. When I asked about the CRKT Pilar, he said he’s waiting on a delivery, and ran out to his car to grab his personal one for me to check out.

At one point, he floated the question of my preference between CPM 20CV and S35VN, and grinned ear to ear when I explained my choice. He was very cool about his own take, as well.

I have a heavy bias in favor of people who are unafraid to give their real opinions, and Stephen does it in a very casual, neighborly way.

He takes a bit about the direction the shop is going, much of which has to do with customization and shop work services. They have full set ups for coating, and are very enthusiastic about all of the cool stuff like backspacers and bling.

Here’s the bit that really locked me in.

I asked Stephen if he was familiar with the Microtech DOC and the infamous F-You pocket clip. He nodded. I said I had one, but *do not have the takedown tool*, and asked if he thought he could do anything with it. He said to bring it by.

I dropped it off on Wednesday. Stephen made calls to people for their input, and did all of his work on it with belt tools while the clip was still mounted on the knife. He had it ready for pick up the next day.

When I got it, I was stunned at how perfectly it came out. He left enough lip on the clip to easily drop it over my pocket with one hand, yet took enough down to allow me to squeeze the thing white-knuckle hard in every grip and be completely comfortable. He even polished the end, so there are no catch points. All of this was done with such care that the tools never touched anything other than the clip.

The visible marks around the handle were all present before I took it in. Where he was working, it’s immaculate.

I strongly recommend these guys as a place to do business with. It feels very much like a family place, and Stephen is a ****ing great guy.

[sidebar: Stephen, if you ever see this... get Spyderco in there. I’m a ZT guy. I understand the BM thing with them being *right there*. Still, it’s a damn shame to not have PM2s and such in the shop.]

OK... ladies and gentlemen, if *you* have a local shop to call out, do not hesitate. That’s what this is about. Tell us who impressed you. Call out the Derrick Bohns and Stephen Tomlinsons of the world. Give them some love.

I think you mean "shout out".

Unfortunately I don't have a local store to shout out to.

Shout out, call out, hug it out, in-n-out... Coffee hasn’t completely set in, so it’s all a mess for me.

For the brief few weeks I thought I was moving to Midland, TX, I found a store there called Bearclaw Knives.

Very broad selection, front displays start with Benchmade, Cheaper Spyderco, etc. then moves to Lionsteel, More Expensive Spyderco. By the time you get all the way around they even have a few Randall’s and an old Buck Kalinga.

We have a new knife store here in Boise I have been in a few times so far. Both the guys in there are true knife people And great to deal with. Northwest Knives is there name and I look forward to spending more time and money with them.Looks like Boise is growing up.WB

Enjoyed your post with regards to a "shout out". KSF has moved local to me now. Where are most of my knife dollars going to be spent now? I never met Derrick, but I miss him somehow and think about him dying so prematurely. I know that I would have liked him. I don't believe KSF has opened the store up yet, but they have told me just call or email and come by (so called appt). I will wait for their store front to open and I don't want to become a pest there.

Frost Cutlery has a store just up the road from KSF. Frost is visible from I-75 and has a billboard sign. I would assume that folks planning on visiting Frost because of the sign will see KSF and likely stop in if they know it's a knife shop.

Been to the Frost Cutlery store twice and that is enough. Great folks. I just wish they had a better product. I know some of the Frosts.

SMKW is a perennial favorite of mine in terms of visiting their store. It is certainly not local to me and a few hours drive. But I still visit several times a year and usually spend more money than I should there each visit.

New Graham is great if you live in southern Virginia. Visited their store once and loved it.

I live semi close to a couple big ones but I’m honestly too lazy to drive 2 hours to a store
I wouldn't make a special trip, but I would try to schedule the time to visit if I am within 30 minutes of them. That is generally what I do with SMKW. I visit the Smoky Mt NP fairly often, but seldom access the park from I-40 or close to the SMKW store in Sevierville TN. It's an event to visit there for me. That used to be the case with Bass Pro and certainly Cabelas until they built stores within 15 miles of me. Same goes with REI as they were only in Nashville TN or Atlanta for the longest time. Convenience generally means a more casual attitude about visiting a store regardless of what they sell.... But I generally spend more money in total with more frequent unplanned visits.

There was a place called “Green Beetle” kicking around Tulsa for a while - they recently closed up shop, though. It was the first place I ever saw a Medford in a store, and they had Bradfords and a few other eyebrow-raising products. Their prices never moved me to buy, and, I guess since they closed, I wasn’t alone in that.

7 streets north, though, there’s a spot called Sports World that has some decent stuff at decent prices. I go there to handle the newest ZT models a few weeks after they come out. I’ve probably spent $800 there in total since I found the place.

The difference between a pest and a customer is merely a purchase away. Buy from them and show them your gratitude and support.

I currently live in NJ and there isn't much in the way of knife shops around here. I have a Bass Pro shop that is about 45 mins away, but they pretty much carry low end Spyderco, Buck, non-USA Case, and that's about it...

Towards the end of this month I am headed to AZ, and there is a knife shop less than 15 blocks from my house and they carry most of the recognizable name brands out there. Needless to say I am looking forward to the loss of carry restrictions and the brick and mortar.

"The Classic Edge" in Richmond, VA is awesome. The store owner let me spend about 2 hours handling knives. I ended up buing a Manix 2 and a Crooked River. He carries ZT, Benchmade, Spyderco, and many other brands. His prices were very good.

RBid, I'm honestly curious, what was his take on s35vn vs 20cv?

He acknowledged enthusiasm for both, as well as the general superiority of 20CV, but leaned a little toward S35VN. The relative ease of working it, while still having a damn good mix of properties, won out. Still, he seems to be a “what am I getting for my dollar?” guy, so I would expect him to lean toward 20CV if the two options were available on the same knife, at the same price.

Bet you're looking forward to your AZ time. KSF about 8 miles from my house. That's pretty darn convenient. My bank is about 1.5 miles from them and Walmart a couple miles. (I visited both yesterday.) I am going to try to buy knives that I would normally buy, versus buying because they're handy.

Only a cabellas near me. A bit pricy and actually not that great of a selection but I have purchased a couple there. 90+% of my purchases are online

I’d like to give a thanks to my local gun and knife store, Skagit Arms in Burlington, WA. I buy all my guns and ammo from them, and have bought a couple Benchmades from them since they are an authorized Benchmade dealer. Last time I was in their I was talking to the owner and asked him if he would ever get any Spydercos in, he said he would think about it. So fast forward almost two weeks, I wander in their on Thursday morning this week, and he’s got almost 30 some Spydercos in the case all of a sudden! These guys are world class, and now they will be getting even more of my money. I was finally able to handle some Spydercos I’ve always been on the fence about because of this. Now if only I can talk him into stocking a few CRK’s...

Thanks Skagit Arms!
