Hello!

The lock on my Socom Elite started to misbehave. When opening the blade with regular force, the lock doesn't fully engage, but instead stops just before entering in lock positon. I have to manually move the lock further. It feels as if there is some tiny step on a lock bar or the blade heel, first the lock enters that step, then moves furter. The pivot is good, there is no blade after locking.

Any ideas would be appreciated, it started yesterday and is very annoying.

Send it in. My socom elite has pretty late lockup. I emailed microtech with my concern that since the knife was discontinued could or would it be repaired or should I retire it. They said they would fix it.

Does the lockbar still have the resistance of the spring when you go to unlock it ? Also where is the lockup

Also check your contact points, the blade tang ,lock face and stop pins, as well as the grooves the stop pins rest in the aluminum. Make sure nothing is getting between these contact point and not allowing full engagement

You can send it in, but you may be without it for a long, long time if you do.

This is true. I would ask how long they estimated it would take. I've read that it's a better turn around than it used to be though. Just depends on the problem, the knife snd where they are in manufacturing I would imagine

I actually it engages, was a small sticking just before engaging the lock. I cleaned and draw with a pencil in the lock area and it is fine now.

Thanks again for you suggestions!

Make sure when the knife Is locked open the lock isn't slipping now. Sounds like something was just in a contact point but to be safe I'd apply a little pressure to the spine when it's opened and make sure the lockbar didn't slip

I would exhaust every possible option before sending it in. Check the feedback good bad & ugly section for lengthy discussions on Microtech taking months, years or never even sending back the knife at all. I had a fantastic Socom Delta that only had a bent pocket clip that needed replacing, which I couldn't do because of the proprietary hardware, that knife went "missing" at the Microtech shop.

Best of luck.

This is quite disconcerting. Did they send you a replacement knife after your original went "missing"? I would be irate if they lost my Socom Delta and didn't send me a new replacement IMMEDIATELY. At least pissed off enough to file suit in small claims court.
I'm probably more upset about this because I've been thinking about sending my Socom Delta in for warranty service to fix the loose feeling lock up and progressive lock up near 100%... it was nice and tight when I bought it, but now has blade play unless I press the lock bar over to 100% lockup.
It's my favorite EDC knife and I want it with the tightest lockup possible, but don't want it sitting on a shelf at Microtech for the next 9 months...

I have had this be an issue on a few knives. In all cases it was a deformed hole for the stop pin in the handles and the actual stop pin would be shifting in the hole effecting lock up. In the closed postition i was noticing the detent wasnt even grabbing the blade so i would try squeezing it pushing the blade and that would move the stop pin but then you would go to open it and the lock would not engage because the stop pin was now shifted and not allowing the knife to fully open.

Microtech has hired a new warranty team to work in the factory and the wait times I have personally seen have been way down. A friend sent in a QC Scarab for deployment issues and it was returned hassle free in about 3 weeks. Their warranty was dog shit for a long time but I am pretty sure it has improved dramatically as of late.

+1. I would do everything on earth to NOT send it in.

I've previously sent in two Socom Deltas, both for detent issues.

When I sent in my first Socom Delta tanto, i was prepared for the long haul. Surprisingly, the tech working on my Socom CALLED me and we went over exactly what I wanted done. I had the knife back in my hand in a little over a month, and it came back perfect... new lock tab cut for early lockup, perfect detent, blade centering, and swapped out with new pivot hardware.

The second service experience was not as great. I sent in a Socom Delta clip point with a weak detent, to the point the blade would fall out with slight shake. Everything else was perfect prior to sending in. Got the knife back 3 months later... detent issue was fixed but blade centering was off. Tried to convince myself it was fine, no rubbing right? Ended up sending the Socom in again and requested the knife tech that repaired my first Socom. Got the knife back in under a month the second time.

So the moral of the story, if you need your Microtech serviced/repaired go ahead and send it in. Your experience with their customer service will vary, but I do believe Microtech is making a concerted effort to improve turnaround time.
